Formation Integrity Test (FIT)

Formation Integrity Test (FIT) It is a method of testing the integrity of the formation and casing shoe by increasing the bottom hole pressure (BHP) to a design pressure. FIT is usually performed to ensure that the formation below the casing is not disturbed during drilling of the next section with higher bottom hole pressure. Typically, municipal drilling engineers design how much formation integrity test pressure is needed, and the unit of FIT is usually pounds per gallon.

How to calculate the pressure required to check the integrity of the formation.

Before performing the formation integrity test, you need to know the pressure required for the Formation Integrity Test. The formula below shows you how to calculate the required FIT pressure.

Required pressure for FIT (psi) = (required FIT in ppg – current mud weight in ppg) x 0.052 x actual vertical depth of shoeing

The following example shows how to use the formula to calculate the pressure required for a test:

Required FIT (ppg) = 14.5

Current clay weight (ppg) = 9.2

Actual vertical depth of shoe (ft) = 4000 TVD

Pressure required for FIT = (14.5-9.2) x 0.052 x 4000 = 1102 psi

Note: Abbreviations are listed below;

psi = pounds per square inch

ppg = pounds per gallon

foot = foot

Formation Integrity Test (FIT) procedures include;

1. Drill a few feet into the new formation, bottom up and collect formation samples to confirm that the new formation has been drilled, then pull the drill string into the casing shoe.

2. Close the annular preventer or pipe rams, line up the cement pump and cycle through the exposed joint line to ensure that the surface line is completely filled with drilling fluid.

3. Stop the pump and close the throttle valve.

4. Slowly pump a small amount of drilling fluid into the well with constant pump strokes, and the recommended pump strokes are 5 to 10 per minute. Record total pump strokes, drill pipe pressure, and casing pressure. Pump until the cap pressure reaches the pressure required to test the formation integrity. Stop the pump and hold the pressure for a few minutes to confirm the pressure stability.

5. Bleed the pressure and open the well. Then start drilling.
