The Best and Worst Beauty Products

If you’re like me, you just love trying new cosmetics and beauty products. Ever since I was a little girl, I watched in awe as my mother carefully took care of her skin and carefully applied makeup that transformed her from a beautiful woman to a stunning living doll.

Skin care has come a long way in recent decades. In the past, the only effective creams were very expensive and could only be purchased from elite dermatologists. But with mucho dinero, every major beauty company is fighting for a piece of the $200 billion global cosmetics market. This intense competition has resulted in innovative products available at affordable prices.

Top Raves

First on my list is Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System Oil, which retails for $27 at drugstores. Based on 80 consumer reviews, this at-home microdermabrasion kit received a score of 4.5 out of 5 on the makeup circuit. And 86 percent of consumers said they would buy the product again. This easy-to-use kit left my skin soft and smooth for less than the cost of professional microdermabrasion. Obviously, a dermatologist’s office procedure will produce more amazing results, but this kit works great for a do-it-yourselfer like myself. However, some users have complained of irritation, so be careful if you have sensitive skin.

Another impressive performer is Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum. This serum retails for $18 for 1.7 oz. bottle, a great everyday moisturizer. It contains dimethicone, which provides a barrier to protect the skin from moisture loss and dehydration. And it goes on matte, so your face won’t look shiny after you put it on.

A very effective and inexpensive binder is the common witch hazel, which you can buy for less than $2 per 16 oz. bottle. To remove makeup or to tone skin after washing your face with soap and water, or instead, apply it to a cotton ball and rub it over your face. And because it contains only 14% alcohol, it is gentle and non-drying.

Mineral makeup is quickly replacing liquid foundation in many women’s makeup routines. Because they’re available as pressed or loose powders, they look more natural than liquid foundation and won’t make you look like you’re wearing a mask. My favorite is Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Face Powder, which retails for $13. This powder received a 4.1 out of 5 rating from 56 consumers, 85% of whom said they would repurchase. And since this powder is mineral, not talc-based, it has a very fine texture and does not look chalky.

Top Rants

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that expensive doesn’t mean better. One of the most highly rated skin products is Creme de la Mer Moisturizer. This cream retails for $110 for 1 oz. jar. Amazingly, it’s 44% petroleum jelly – one of the cheapest moisturizers out there! Being one of the idiots who bought into its hype, I was disappointed that putting this on my face felt like it was spread over a cinder block. Also, this cream is too rich for most complexions and can cause irritation due to the high concentration of oil…yeah, I mean…petroleum jelly

Another poor performer is StriVectin SD Cream. It was originally marketed to reduce stretch marks – but lo and behold! – some obscure scientist, no doubt in conjunction with a clever advertising agency, discovered that StriVectin, according to its advertisements, fights wrinkles “better than Botox”. Thus, the new holy grail cream was born. The only problem is that things don’t work. I paid $135 for a 6 oz. a tube of cream that smells funny and looks like Ben Gay. Others agree: the cream scored 2.5 out of 5 from 33 consumers, and only 44 percent said they would buy it again.

So, ethically speaking, while there are truly effective beauty products out there, most of them are just clever marketing gimmicks. Remember, cosmetic companies play on our collective insecurities to sell their overpriced products. Before you shell out big bucks for those “miracle creams,” do some research. Looking good is important, but nobody looks good with egg on their face.
