Greenhouse Roof Styles

There are many greenhouse roof styles available. I am always asked what the difference is. Well, some will give you a little more head room, and some may give you a little more space to hang plants, but really the difference is only visible.

· Straight Eaves or Gable Style – This is basically the same roof style as a traditional or ranch style house. If you look at it from the end it is a triangle shape. There is a simple mathematical formula to calculate the long side of the roof, say if you want to buy shade cloth. You need to know the width of the greenhouse and the height of the sidewalls and the height of the peak. You take half the width of the greenhouse in inches and square it. You take the peak height and subtract the sidewall height. Take this measurement in inches and square it and add it to the number you had before. · Curved eave roof – just what it sounds like. You can find it in a pipe frame with polyfilm or polycarbonate. Or, you can find it in an aluminum frame with glass or polycarbonate. You may need to calculate the size on it to substitute for polyfilm, polycarbonate or shade cloth. The easiest way to do this is to apply a tape measure to the frame and simply measure. There is no simple calculation because some of these are simply not true half circles.

· Gambrel-shaped – Also known as a barn-style roof. It is made up of many angles to form a peak. It was also best to calculate the size in six with a tape measure. These are not all that common and are usually found in resin (or plastic) frames.
