Canadian Urban Legend Wes ‘MAESTRO’ Williams – Still Bringing the Music to Us After All These Years
MAESTRO may have passed his “Let Your Backbone Slide” days, but people still associate him with his first hit 15 years ago. Does it bother him? Under no circumstances! For MAESTRO it is through his achievements as an artist that he has evolved and proudly looks back fondly on his early years.
To date no one has surpassed the level of achievements achieved by MAESTRO. To date, 7 music awards, 7 albums, 11 Juno nominations, gold and platinum albums, gold singles and a mix of other awards in film/TV and personal achievements. All this, plus a film and television career? His latest album is called Urban Landmark 1989-2005 – it’s clear he’s made his mark, now let’s see where he goes from here!
My first interview on radio was with MAESTRO, when I was working at York University Radio, he was a special guest on a program called “The Cutting Edge”. After a short time together on the show I realized, that this is one hell of a passionate man! She is passionate about what she does, who she talks to, what she engages with and most of all about music. That’s the passion I saw and felt when we (Lisa Norman and I) sat down with him the day before his CD release party. He’s really “contin’ thangs” more than ever, his life a fully developed “symphony in effect” – just goes to show you he’s “built to last”.
WES has words
Do you seem to have a love affair with Canadian contemporary and rock artists? Isn’t this an average approach to hip hop?
WES- Janet Jackson sampled Joni Mitchell, that’s far from me, Canadian artists, sampled another Canadian artist. see?
Yes, but you are the only one who is allowed to do this.
WES- No, the Swell members did too, but not many people know that they did a track with Sarah McLachlan that was hot. It was off their last album…..I don’t know why those guys didn’t make it a single, it was too hot!
To date you have worked with “HAYWIRE”, guess WHO and now Govan!
WES- It’s just something I love to do. Take Canadian rock records and improve them. I have these albums, I love them- I collect them.
So, within the song you hear, you hear another song?
Orlena, Hip Hop Up N’ Comer Subliminal, Lisa WES- Yeah, Yeah. Like when I heard “Stick to Your Vision” (a track off his last album, which sampled The Guess Who’s – These Eyes) – I was like… hoooooo! That was a good reflective song about what you’ve been through and at the same time inspiring to talk about.
So was it a favorite?
WES- Hell, yes! (laughter)
Lyrically do you come first with the words or the music?
WES- There is no specific formula. A concept may come first and then the music later. You know I never try to assimilate – I try to innovate.
So your latest track, Criminal Mind with Larry Gowan – is that something you hear within the lyrics, or is that something you imagine yourself?
(lr) Orlena, actor-Richard Leacock, Liesa WES-Nah. It was like the original version was talking about being a criminal and having a criminal mind. I was of the opinion that the justice system was more criminal. But, at the same time, we as a community are not in a position where we are more followers than we are leaders. You have to be a leader in life and stop making excuses no matter what! I put my own little spin on it with the lyrics. What I love is that Randy Bachman and Larry Gowan, both love what I did with the song.
Were you in the studio with Larry Gowan?
WES – No. I was in his living room when I played him the track when it was over and I saw the hair stand up on his arm. Then we went down to watch his video from Criminal Minds and then my new one, that’s in. The video is now fully rotated – it’s just bananas!
Do you think the violence portrayed by the media is accurate? Or do you feel an increase in violence within minorities?
Showstoppers (ctre) Maestro
AND THE CARDINAL OFFICIAL WES- Yes, yes (he sighs). It’s a bit of both. A bit of sensationalism still happens though. But, to me, it’s a shame for all people that we carry on with each other like this. We don’t have to be like that. We have lost the ability to “speak” to each other. My question is how did the guns get here in the first place? Who is bringing them to the country? That’s the last line of my song Guilty Mind. I come from a good place and I hope people are attracted to what I’m doing.
There are 5 new hits in the album that came out on August 23?
WES- The album doesn’t really have five new hits, but 5 previously unreleased songs. These tracks have been out before, but only on radio and unavailable for purchase as singles.
Well, your greatest hits album, covering the span of your career – are you ready to do any of those tricks you used to spin for “Let your Backbone Slide.”
R&B Sweetie Melanie Durantves- Oh Yeah. I’m going to do a full blown show! Choreography, work.. to be ready to die!
Even after all these years you are in the grip of death. You still have the same fever and taste that you had when you were young. It’s good to see! What are you listening to in your car right now? Do you have any musical influences?
WES- I’m listening to myself right now (outbreak of laughter from all of us). I have a CD of my program and have been practicing it over and over again.
Laughs aside, you have a reputation for repair, if you don’t get it right you know people will be writing about it! Watching and waiting for you to fall..or just off stage!
What a night! WES- That’s cool…check it out…stay tuned!
FYI- The next day MAESTRO came along and blew the roof off the MOD CLUB! The place was packed, people were bumpin’ to his hits and when he gave us the last track… it was all over. Hey! When the MAESTRO left the stage – everyone left.
