The Law of Duality – In the Long Run, Every Market Becomes a Two-Horse Race
In the early stages of a product category’s life cycle, a product ladder with many rungs is built. Gradually, the ladder becomes a two-tone affair.
In batteries, it’s Everready and Duracell. In rental cars, it’s Hertz and Avis. In hamburgers it’s McDonald’s and Burger King. In toothpaste, it’s Crest and Colgate.
The law of duality suggests that over the life cycle of a product category, the bottom of the ladder will lose market share and disappear; The top spot will lose market share; And number 2 on the product ladder will gain market share, ensuring a two-horse race.
Are the results predetermined? Of course not. There are other rules of marketing that can affect results as well.
Moreover, your marketing programs can strongly influence your sales, provided they are consistent with the laws of marketing. For example, instead of going out and attacking two strong leaders, what you can do is create an advantageous position (such as the crest blocking the caves as described in No. 5, Law of Focus).
Knowing that marketing is a two-horse race in the long run can help you plan a strategy in the short term.
It often happens that there is no clear-cut number 2. What happens next depends on how skilled the contenders are.
Particularly troubling from an economic perspective is the waste of resources in many high-value product categories, but this is the cost of capitalism.
See the history of the automobile industry in the United States. In 1904, 195 different cars were assembled by 60 companies. Over the next 10 years, 531 companies were formed and 346 were destroyed. By 1923, only 108 car manufacturers remained. This number fell to 44 by 1927. Today, Ford is fighting for the second rung on the ladder with General Motors and Chrysler on the top rung of the manufacturing ladder.
Successful marketers focus on the top two lines. Jack Welch said during his reign as chairman of General Electric that “only businesses that are No. 1 or No. 2 in their market can win in an increasingly competitive global arena. Those that can’t be No. 1 or No. 2 are fixed, closed, or sold.”
This type of thinking has built companies like Procter & Gamble into powerhouses where it is either No. 1 or No. 2 in more than 80% of product categories.
Early in the product lifecycle, a number 3 or number 4 color on the product ladder looks attractive. Sales are increasing. New and relatively unexpected customers are entering the market. These customers don’t always know which brands are dominant so they choose the ones that look interesting or appealing…hence MyStory Marketing and Brand You Inc. Many internet marketing professionals are interested in Often these brands do not have color 3 or number 4 on the product ladder.
Over time these customers become educated. They want a leading brand based on the naive assumption that a leading brand must be good.
The customer believes that marketing is the battle of the product. It’s this kind of thinking that keeps the two brands on top. Customers say the top two brands “must be the best because they are the brand leaders.”
As an internet marketing professional, you need to understand the law of duality. To compete, use Brand You Inc and MyStory marketing methods and techniques to create your own product category or define a niche where you can become a leader and hold the top rung of the product category ladder (as described in No. 7, Law. Ladder of).
Many internet marketing entrepreneurs are using techniques and tools like mind-mapping, keyword research, attraction marketing formula, magnet sponsorship, and MindMeister to conduct market research and plan a successful marketing campaign. They then use the power of MyStory Marketing, Brand You Inc, and hypnotic writing skills, in their marketing campaigns, to realistically deal with their brand’s position in a world that includes the Law of Duality. The goals are not to emphasize why their offering is better, in terms of features, and functionality than competitors, but to develop a message that is recognized, accepted, and accepted so that it can entice the customer and convince them that the offering is genuine. And will work for them.
Marketing is not a product battle. It’s all about the strategy you use to benefit from the law of duality to ensure your brand and product is one of the top two brands on the product ladder.
