F1 2009 PSP Review

F1 2009 PSP

Every once in a while a game comes along that you can’t wait to play. For me that game is F1 2009 for PSP. This is the first official Formula One game since 2007, when Studio Liverpool released the commentary for the sport.

November 19 was the day I finally got to play with my favorite F1 drivers around some of the best tracks in the world. But was the wait worth it?

presentation

The menus are very basic. First you need to enter your name, country and other relevant information that represents you in online games and (more importantly) in career mode. The main menu shows the car in the background and the options you have. You can play Quick Race, Grand Prix Weekend, World Championship, Career, Ad Hoc or Challenges. Once you select a car in any mode, the background car will change to your selected team. It’s a nice touch that can go a long way in the overall presentation. Before each race you will see parts of the track, similar to official TV coverage. The graphics of the game are very decent. The cars look great and the tracks are made in great detail. Although I have to admit that some of the tracks seem a bit flat. The first real problem comes when you start running. Frames take a noticeable hit at the start of a race and when multiple cars are close together. You won’t notice this in practice or qualifying – but it will compromise your racing experience. The sound is also good. I like the engine better than previous PSP F1 titles. But the KERS activation sound is really fake and annoying. As is the main menu music.

gameplay

The most important thing in a racing title is to drive it well. F1 2009 fails in this department. All cars steer like crazy; A small touch of the directional buttons will be enough to take even the slowest corners. This is problematic because it makes small improvements really difficult. We don’t like the inclusion of KERS (boost button for 7 seconds per lap) on all cars in the game. Only Ferrari and McLaren have used it in real life and it is unrealistic to see it in every F1 2009 competitor. After a few hours of driving we got used to the steering which was great. But then came AI. Computer cars tend to hit you from behind. They are very aggressive. But other than that we have few complaints about computer cars. They can crash into walls and make mistakes, just like a real person. I was also surprised to see a brown car behind me crash in the first corner of the German GP.

Now I must mention the career, because this is where you will spend most of your time. The agent contacts you by email and informs you about events in F1 and tests with other teams. Initially you can test for BMW and Toro Rosso, failure to get a seat will earn you a place on the Force India team. So you’ll be driving the Grand Prix’ anyway; You cannot be a test driver. We appreciate that because a lot of people only care about racing, but it’s just another layer of depth missing in F1 2009. Two other complaints we have about Carrier Mode are that emails feel too static. They try to make it more realistic like: ‘Ferrari feels no competition for the 2009 championship’, but generally it doesn’t feel humane. Another and final issue with the career we have is that it only lasts for 3 seasons. When you are done with the career two other exciting modes will await you. The first is Challenge Mode where you try to beat bite-sized challenges like overtaking Hamilton or overtaking as many cars as possible. It works fine on a portable system but doesn’t excite an F1 fanatic like me. Ad hoc excites me though. You can drive a full season with a friend or someone around the world. It’s great fun but unfortunately I haven’t been able to test it yet.

Compared to the past

It’s hard to compare this game to the last F1 game on the PSP system, which was F1 06. The graphics and sounds in the first F1 2009 are slightly better but since this game came out three years later, it cannot be called an achievement. F1 2009 looks more dynamic when it comes to penalties and AI speed. A collision may cause you to drive through or stop and go. It’s really cool and really realistic. Also the AI speed is commendable. We found that teams were faster at curtain GP than others. Ferrari was driving mid-field in China but was very competitive in Monaco. This is something we haven’t seen before in an F1 game – ever! Timing has also been improved in this game. Now your lap times will be compared to the fastest time just like in real life. Times in F1 06 were compared to your own personal best. F1 2006 has this game beat though when it comes to commentary (F1 2009 doesn’t have it) and gameplay.

conclusion

F1 2009 has great potential for the PSP. We love the little touches like the penalty system and the way the game handles time differences. The graphics are really good and it’s nice to finally play with the latest cars and drivers. But the heavy frame tempers the sporting experience, and the handling isn’t even close to how an F1 car should drive.

7/10
