The Importance of Physical Fitness

I have worked in information technology sales for 25 years. Every year the sales force gets together for their annual drink-fest, I mean sales meeting. Last year it occurred to me that when small groups of boys get together – say, 10 of us – no less than 7 have their guts stretched out and generally look out of shape. They do not understand the importance of fitness.

I’m not just talking about the big guys, I mean the little guys too. I know a bunch of twenty-something guys in my area who are becoming lazy. I’m 49 years old and can run circles around most of the younger guys I work with. There are no excuses guys! You need to improve your fitness level!

I’ve noticed over the past few years that within our rather large sales force (over 200 people) there is an increasing number of outsized guys. I think the percentage of out-of-shape guys is much larger than the percentage of out-of-shape women in the group. Now, this is not scientific, but it is a very accurate assumption.

Now ladies, I’m not going to be as hard on you, because you have kids and, frankly, you’re tougher than I am! I think women as a group care more about how they look, and at least try to eat right and exercise.

There is no doubt, as a population, we are getting fatter. We are also providing our children with less positive role models. This is evident as obesity also increases in children. Let’s make a conscious decision to reverse this trend.

What are the steps to do this?

You have to decide that you want to be healthy and physically fit. You need to start by understanding what it means to you. I know you know – what were you thinking when you were searching the net? Are you looking for fitness? Exercise? Nutrition? Fat loss?

Here are the basic components of physical fitness: aerobic endurance, muscular endurance and strength, flexibility, and body composition.

If you’re unhappy with how your body looks, you probably realize that your body composition is made up of a high percentage of fat. Body composition is actually a result of the actions you take throughout your life. Decide to put those bad choices and bad habits behind you. You are not that person anymore! Say it: “I’m healthy and fit!”

Getting into that frame of mind is very important, and it needs to be followed by action.

Set a goal.

To get somewhere, you must know where you are going. So, goal setting is the next step. I prefer to call this plan setting. What do you need to do every day to reach that goal?

You are where you were, and where you want to be now. Goal setting is much easier when you are inspired by others. You can shorten the plan-setting phase by role modeling the successful health and fitness strategies of men and women who have overcome aging and disease.

They say you are the average of the five people you hang out with the most. So, are you watching football on the couch with your friends? Are most of your friends sedentary? Do you and your spouse or significant other live alone after work? Do you share the same bad eating habits?

Look at the people around you. Look, if you’re overweight, hanging around people who keep you from improving isn’t going to propel you toward success. I’m not saying you should leave your spouse! I say you should have a heart to heart talk, and convince your spouse to support your improvement, and let him join you!

Role modeling is the secret to inspiration, rapid learning, and rapid body transformation! Motivation is very important to your success. Not only that, but taking that first step and setting an action plan is key!

Taking that first step will propel you toward your goal. You will be motivated to do more, and your actions will lead to steady results. You will be motivated to learn more about your new lifestyle and this will lead to a higher level of confidence. At this point you’ve learned that the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people tend to do things that unsuccessful people don’t. You took action and established a habit of self-care; Eating right and exercising.

Now you have speed to your goal.
