While traveling in Beijing, my girlfriend and I walked into a giant pearl outlet and were greeted at the front door by several well-dressed women, one of whom ushered us inside. She then proceeded to guide us to a stand with a good sized aquarium on top of it.

Inside the aquarium was a bunch of oysters the size of my hand. She gave the net to my girlfriend and brought out her fish. (So ​​yes….oyster fishing is really a sport in China, sort of….) During this time the lady was giving us lessons on how to get oysters and pearls – different colors, different types, different places. them, etc

The education part of selling begins

It was no less than the teaching of oysters and pearls.

How charming. I never thought I’d care so much about oysters (most of the time I’m preoccupied with what sauce I want to pour over them before eating them whole).

Once we got an oyster, the lady put it on the table, took out a knife and hacked at the poor lil oyster (it never stood a chance) while asking us to guess how many pearls we could find. inside

Now that I’ve had time to dissect what happened, I realize that was one heck of a sales/marketing system that harnesses the awesome power of sales. Let me explain.

Marketing is the process of selling through education.

It’s not so much about sales as it is about educating your prospect that they want to buy from you.

You see, people hate to sell but they love to buy. Selucation is providing them with so much useful information that it’s only natural that they perceive you as an expert and their advocate and want to buy from you.

Let’s examine the pearl sale process in more details.

Breaking it down…

First, he taught us about oysters and pearls, thereby encouraging us to invest some kind of interest in the subject at hand – oysters and pearls.

She then had us actively fish for one inside the tank – now we have a sense of emotional attachment to that oyster and the treasure inside. After all, it became our oyster because it was brought out by the fruits of our efforts (never mind how little our efforts were, that is beside the point; the point is that we invested effort and the sense of attachment grew).

By now, she definitely had us interested and invested in this whole market of oysters and pearls – a market I had never been interested in in my life.

The challenge is….how do you change this interest from just oysters and pearls to their oysters and pearls?

The “selling” part of the sale

Remember the part where they taught us how to spot fake pearls?

Well, by showing us how to spot a fake, they’re basically saying “Look, we’re going to try to sell you a fake right away by showing you how to spot a fake? Of course not and that’s why you should trust and buy from us!”

And of course, gifts, who can forget about free gifts? Surely this is just a nice gesture from the ladies? Surely she thought we were the cutest couple and wanted to reward us for looking so good?

No! (I mean, we make a cute couple but that’s not the reason for the gift.)

See, our human mind works according to what we are willing to reciprocate. When someone does something nice for us, we have a tendency to want to return the favor – not all the time and certainly not all of us, but a fair amount.

That gift subconsciously makes us feel somewhat indebted, that we should return the good gesture. And what better way to do that than to spend a lot of money and buy a lot of pearls that the lady will surely bite?

Finally

All this was a game of charades to buy us.

But don’t get me wrong, we are happy with our purchases and we would do it again. We as consumers felt we were treated fairly, felt safe, and felt we weren’t being duped by fake pearls. We were happy to buy with the peace of mind that was provided to us.

This, my friend, is the power of selling – selling through education.
