Teaching adults is commonly referred to as instruction or facilitation, and is often viewed as a specialized task with associated needs depending on the individual’s situation and the classroom environment. Some people choose to pursue adult education as a career at a traditional university and others choose a non-traditional path, such as an online school or a corporate classroom.
But why does anyone, or why, decide to teach adults as a career choice? I’ve found people who are good at delivering information, making the learning process effective, or great as public speakers, and those are often the primary reasons for being in a classroom and holding a job related to some form of instruction. Other people are subject matter experts or effective researchers, and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with students in the classroom.
Those reasons provide the basis for the teacher or instructor to have the necessary knowledge to be effective in the teaching or instruction process, to lecture or teach in an engaging manner; However, what can change if a coach should seek to coach and coach? More importantly, how does one put their heart and soul into their teaching practice? Does every coach need to take care of their role? Is it important for students to interact with someone who exhibits that kind of passion? These are questions that I will explore further based on my work as a teacher.
Effects of educational environment
There are two types of educational environments, the traditional classroom and the online environment. Most of my experience has been teaching adult students and faculty as students in non-traditional online classes. This is an important distinction given that I am not assigned the title of professor and, except for a few community college classes taught as an adjunct, I am not assigned to teach in a traditional classroom. Instead of preparing for a weekly lecture, I worked in an industry that required classroom engagement and interaction on weekends, weekends, and weekends. Based on my experience in non-traditional academic fields, most students are working adults, whether they were my undergraduate or graduate students. This means that their schoolwork may not always be the only demand on them each week because they may have other responsibilities that include career and family. These students often seek degrees for specific needs related to their careers. When they interact with others in the classroom they may not always start with an open mind because they have their own beliefs, opinions, established patterns of thought, and habitual ways of thinking. They see the world from a particular point of view and perspective.
Students also have expectations, whether they express those expectations to their teachers or not. They expect the class and others to do what they want or need, to confirm what they already believe, to meet their personal and professional needs, and to operate according to how they experience the world. Sometimes those expectations are met, and sometimes there is a clash of ideals, beliefs and ideas. When expectations are not met, there can be a disconnect and that is when the coach’s disposition and support are most important. From my experience, a caring instructor is more effective than one who demands strict compliance and cannot empathize with students. What I am talking about however goes beyond care and I refer to it as the heart and soul of teaching. For me, it has been a product of time, with a process of trial and error. When you put your heart and soul into a career, when you feel alive and fully engaged in it, you challenge it and teach you new life lessons. When you put your heart and soul into something, and then you realize you’ve lost it, the joy seems to go out of your work and then it’s time for some kind of change.
Reading has always been second nature to me. It’s one of my first memories as a kid, before I really knew what I was doing, and throughout my career I’ve found myself in a classroom, no matter what my job titles were at the time. Corporate training and then higher education was a natural progression for me. Working as an online assistant for several years challenged the heart and soul I put into my career and I reached a point where stressful situations overcame me and I allowed it to create a negative mindset. I finally had to stop making excuses, unplug from technology, and take a break. I used that time to go back and remember who I am, why I love my career, and I came back renewed and revitalized. It was about shifting my focus from the situation to controlling my thoughts.

They will be affected by it, especially at times when they feel challenged by what they read, what they hear, or what they need to do. Your ability to care and empathize, while being a coach, mentor, and teacher, will serve you and them well. You will feel challenged at times by situations, circumstances, circumstances and expectations.
