## Reserves Estimation

In the CGS system, the tonnage in metric tons is calculated by multiplying the specific gravity of the economic mineral by the total volume in cubic meters. In the FPS system, the total volume in cubic feet must be divided by the tonnage factor. The tonnage factor represents the number of cubic feet in a ton of ore. The tonnage factor can be calculated by the formula: 2240/ 62.5Xg cubic feet, where g is the specific gravity of the ore.

Total reserves in an area can be found by dividing the volume by the tonnage factor. Due to the presence of pore spaces, fractures and cavities in the ore body, care must be taken in weight calculations.

To estimate reserves, the first step is to divide the mineral reserve area into a number of ore reserve blocks. On planning paper, each bore hole or pit is a unit.

For each block, the area of influence needs to be calculated. The volume can be obtained by multiplying the area with the true width of the ore body. The attitude of the deposit determines the method of calculation of the area.

The total tonnage can be calculated by adding the tonnage in the individual blocks. The average grade (A) is given by the formula:

T1A1+T2A2+T3A3… T10A10/ T1+T2+T3… T10

If a deposit has 10 ore deposits and the tonnage of each is represented by T1, T2, T3, and grades A1, A2, A3.

There are mainly two ways to find the area of blocks 1. Geometrical, and 2. Graphically.

Included area method, extended area method, triangle method, and polygon method fall under the former category. In the latter category, there are isochore mapping method, stratum contours, transverse section method.

Before using any method, delineation of mineralized zones should be done based on geological knowledge such as ore continuity, structural features, pitch etc.

If bore holes or trenches are drilled in a grid pattern, the contained area method is highly advised. In this method, the area of influence and hence the load on the central pit or bore holes is twice four times that of the side and corner pits. In the extended area method all blocks have the same area of influence. Triangulation and polygon methods are often applied for a non-grid pattern of sampling points.
