A Place Called "Wits End"? The Five Phases We Go Through

“They stagger to and fro, and stagger like drunken men, and are at their wits’ end.” Psalm 107:27. This story begins in verse 23. In verses 23 and 24 we find many holy men selling their wares on merchant ships. We know they are having a good day because they are praising God.

But in verses 25 and 26 a sudden storm comes out of nowhere. And it’s a big one. The storm is so terrible that they fear for their lives.

In verse 27 we see these people thrown so violently that it was all they could do. There is nothing they can do to save themselves. They are at their “wisdom’s end”.

Like these sailors – sometimes everything in our Christian life is going right. We are praising God for all the wonderful things He has done for us. Then a storm came out of nowhere. And they began to come. The burden became so great that you could not see any way out. It felt like you couldn’t take it anymore. You may find yourself thinking “God when is this going to stop?” He found them shouting. – You were at your wits end.

When we are in the “storm of our lives” we go through five stages.

1. “Wit’s End” is a place that God sometimes begins – notice in verse 5 that God commanded the storm. Whatever storms you go through – God will keep you there. He knew what he was doing – he was never surprised. The good news is, before you had a problem – he had a solution.

He put you there for His purpose. (It is about Him) (He is our Lord). “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Work as I purposed.” Romans 8:28

He is trying to produce something in your heart, to bring you to full faith and trust in Him. Or maybe He has a purpose in your life to strengthen you for a particular service. Sometimes we think we are waiting for God to show us something, when in fact He is growing in us so He can reveal us.

2. “Wit’s End” is a place where God tests us – He allows extreme circumstances to overtake us (a storm). It could be a lost job, illness, eviction notice, marital problems, or addiction.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.” Jeremiah 17:7. He wants to bring us to the path of obedience, to trust in Him so that He can bless us. I believe God is looking down on us, cheering us on, Brother Ray, you can make it. Trust me so that I can bless you. Sometimes we are so close, but never give up.

Sometimes we don’t pass the test and He can go ahead and make us pass it. But when we don’t, here comes another test behind it. Here comes the second wave in our storm. If we believe him only in the first test (wave), the second wave cannot come.

3. “Wit’s End is where we sometimes fail the Lord – we fail God when we don’t trust Him. When we rely on ourselves or others to solve our problems.” Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.” Jeremiah 17:5.

The Israelites wondered in the desert for 40 years and never passed the test. And God had provided a solution to all their problems. When they crossed the Red Sea, they rejoiced and praised God, but in the next trial when they found the bitter waters of Marah, they were afraid.

Israel received forty years of miraculous food – miraculous water – a miraculous cloud by day – miraculous fire at night – miraculous protection – miraculous clothing that never took off. And yet they doubted God. And all but two of them died in unbelief in the wilderness. God longed to bring them to Canaan, the land of milk and honey. But they never trusted God with their storms.

4. “Wit’s End” is a place where God takes over for us – We read in verses 28 and 29 that God took control and calmed the storm and gave them peace.

The sailors had to make two decisions before God took over. First they had to admit to themselves and to God that neither they nor anyone else could help them. Second, they cried out to the Lord—turning only to Him.

Sometimes God has to break us – bring us to trust Him – so that He can fix us.

5. “Wit’s End” is a place where our trials become gifts. (After Victory) – Sometimes His plans are not the ones I choose for myself. I don’t choose to be broke and penniless, lose my family, or homeless (digging through dumpsters), or cold or hungry, or addicted to drugs, or lonely – but I have been all of those things. I know a place called “wits end”.

I pray that I never experience any of these storms again. But I will take nothing for the gifts they bring me.

Thousands have begun to bring others to Christ through “Bridge Ministries.” We are given gifts through our trials. Everyone has to face a great tragedy in their life. As Christians when we overcome these trials through faith in God, they become gifts that can be used to comfort others and bring them to Christ.

“What a wonderful God we have—he is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and who comforts and strengthens us exceedingly in our troubles and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are in trouble, our sympathy and encouragement In need, we can give them the same help and comfort that God has given us.” – 2 Corinthians 1:3,4.
