## How to Position Your Hands During the Golf Swing for More Distance and Control

I’ve written extensively about how the arms work during the golf swing because their function is probably one of the most important aspects of the entire swing.

Before I delve in, I want to share some thoughts on how I approach golf instruction with students because the overall sense I get from the nature of the questions raised is that readers are often looking for answers about the hands being analyzed. And impractical to control…

The golf swing can be a very simple and efficient task if it is approached in that way…

It can also be an extremely complex task if you try to break down and analyze all the moving parts of the swing with the aim of somehow trying to consciously control each little element.

I simplify the swing into two important moving parts:

1. Rotation of the shoulders and trunk

2. Twisting the arms

With each of these motions you are aiming to achieve two objectives:

1. A simple single plane swing

2. Fully flexible and comfortable hands

Unlike other sports like tennis where you have to have complex variations in your arm action and swing action to follow your opponent, I encourage students to keep everything simple to make the golf swing easier.

The reason for this is purely to achieve consistency from shot to shot. That is the key to scoring success.

The ability to bend and curve a ball using complex hand movements is not…

Set up a routine

Most of the swing motion and requirements that affect both hand action and swing plane are dealt with in your setup before you pull the trigger on the swing.

Once your swing is in motion, there is very little to adjust after that.

Here are several key elements that I would focus on for your hands that are all taken care of in your setup routine:

1. The alignment and stance routine gets your hands in the correct position relative to the ball, club face and target before the swing begins. In setup I always advise that the hands are placed slightly ahead of the ball to keep them in a “strong” wrist position.

2. The correct grip will create a “stable” take away and cause the arms to break with correct action and plane when they are cocked. I always advise a “strong” grip with the left thumb on the right side of the grip centerline. (right thumb for left handers).

3. At the beginning of the swing and in the first phase of the back swing, the left side should be strong creating the unity of the left arm and wrist. This will get you into the correct hand position at the top of the swing. I recommend keeping the left elbow pointing towards the ground to achieve this. (right elbow for left handers).

take away

Another important point in your swing after your setup is the take away. A lot of hand/swing problems can be created by the first critical movement of your shoulders and the hands on the take not being done correctly.

Again, the take away should be kept as simple as possible by focusing on just two things:

4. The backswing should begin with a downward swing of the left shoulder, not an arm motion. This action keeps the swing in a mid-to-upright swing plane, improves back swing balance by encouraging trunk rotation, and reduces unnecessary hand action on the take away.

5. Within the first 6 inches of the take away, your arm should have zero motion. They need to be firm with your left side.

Backing

As you progress into the backswing you only have “one thought” in your mind at this point, and that is the “trigger thought” to start rotating your left shoulder down to start the backswing.

Everything up to that point has been taken care of in your setup to create that firm left side to strengthen your left hand and arm in preparation for the take away.

So there’s no need to think about anything else… other thoughts just complicate the backswing.

All that remains in the backswing is:

6. Make sure to work within the range of motion of your natural swing muscle flexibility to avoid left elbow break.

If you are able to focus on these techniques alone, your arms will reach the top of the swing in the correct position without you having to worry or think about their orientation.

Critical: If the left elbow breaks in the backswing, all bets are off on being in the correct swing plane and having correct arm action.

Downswing

Now for the downswing, the most important aspect to think about is:

1. Rotate the hips to start the turn – one more triggering thought

2. Delay the arm release by allowing your arm to fully relax at the top of the swing.

Starting the downswing mode with the hips keeps the swing in the correct plane. As long as the arms are relaxed and not pre-released, they will be in the correct orientation going into the impact position. So no need to think about them again.

As for the release itself, that is purely controlled by the timing of the downswing…not the orientation of your hands or how they are turning into the ball. Your hand orientation and how they react to impact is often determined by your grip which you have already taken care of in your setup.

If you approach the release worrying about the orientation or action of your hands on the downswing you will find it extremely difficult to control the swing with any consistency and you will lose distance.

Timing is the act of coordinating the release of the arm with the rotation of the shoulder.

If you’re looking for some feature of hand release that has a more complicated explanation than this, I’m sorry to disappoint you.

The reality is that there is not much more to it. Big hitters let their arms rest and go along for the ride in the downswing.

Keep all the clear messages from this article as simple as possible to everyone.

Improve your setup techniques because they are so important to starting the swing on the right track where attention to small details is not necessary… If you follow those simple guidelines the arm and swing will work naturally.

good wishes
