Faith-Based Key Components of Classroom Management

Whether you struggle with classroom management or you’re a classroom management pro, you’ve probably had “that student” who challenges you. We all have. You’ve tried every strategy you know, but nothing seems to be working. Have you ever thought that there might be more to “that student” than meets the eye? Could it be that nothing you’ve tried is working? Could you be missing a key component of classroom management?

A new perspective on classroom challenges

If you can see beyond what your human eye can see, you may be surprised to discover other nuances happening in your classroom that you haven’t considered yet.

Consider this familiar scripture from the book of Ephesians:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers in this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12, English Standard Version

“Your hand-to-hand combat is not with human beings, but with the supreme kingdoms and authorities operating under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits who hold this dark world in chains.” Ephesians 6:12, The Passion Translation

Does this open your eyes? Imagine having X-ray vision into the spiritual dimension of your classroom. You will see the spiritual forces of evil set against you and your students as well as the spiritual forces of light (angels) sent to help them and you. Wow! There’s a lot more going on in your classroom than you realize! Can you see why there might be some key components of classroom management that you might need to add to your toolbox?

While little Johnny or Suzy may seem like the source of your problems, they’re not what you’re really struggling with. It is quite possible that there is something else that influences their action. I’m sure you’ve seen cartoon images with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. If you can look into the spirit realm you can realize that this image is not far from the base.

Spiritual strategies as a key component of classroom management

Before I go any further, let me be clear. I am not advocating excusing negative student behavior based on the “the devil made him do it” excuse. What I am suggesting, however, is that many of the problems you face have both a spiritual and a natural side. This means that you need core components of classroom management that include both spiritual and natural approaches.

There are many excellent resources that offer natural classroom management strategies. I would like to offer you some key elements of management from a spiritual perspective. These strategies are taken directly from scripture.

The same scripture in Ephesians that tells us who our struggle is really against also gives us some tools and strategies to stand against this enemy. I could say a lot about every tool and strategy listed in Ephesians 6, but for now I want to focus on two things:

The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17)

Pray always in the Spirit, with all prayers and supplications (Ephesians 6:18).

Say what God says about the student or the situation

I used to think that “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” meant scripture. I would pray the scriptures in situations, and I saw many answers to prayer. Later I discovered that this passage does not only refer to scriptures. It refers to the Rema or spoken word of God.

I love reading Josh in translation. The translator takes the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic manuscripts to convey God’s original message into modern English.

Look at Ephesians 6:17 in the Passion Translation:

“And take the mighty spirit-sword of the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17, The Passion Translation

When you say what God says in a situation, it is powerful! Isaiah 55:11 says, “So shall my word go forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, it shall accomplish my purpose, and it shall succeed in the work for which I have sent it.”

Saying What God Says is an effective tool to add to the core of your classroom management techniques!

What I recommend when dealing with classroom struggles: The classroom environment

First, ask God to show you what is going on spiritually that your natural eyes cannot see. (Jeremiah 33:3)

Next, find out what he has to say about the situation. Sometimes it can come through a scriptural truth you know about a situation. Other times it may come through what the Holy Spirit is telling your soul about a situation.

Then, listen to what God has to say about the situation.

Declarative prayer in classroom situations

When you say what God says about a situation, you are essentially making a declaration about it. If you are not familiar with this type of prayer you may be wondering, “What does this mean? Is it scriptural?” Allow me to share an excerpt from an article on declarative prayer by Debbie Przybylski of Intercessors Arise International:

“Declarative prayer is a dynamic way of praying strategically. If we want to pray declaratively we must be willing to wait to hear the Lord’s voice. We must know the Lord’s timing and voice. It cannot be our personal will. It is not. Name it, Pray it. It must be God. He always has a plan. As His ambassadors and representatives on earth, we must stand in the pit in prayer for others (Ezekiel 22:20)…”

“Declarative prayer claims supernatural intervention from God on God’s terms, not ours. For declarative prayer our faith comes from God and not our own efforts – God works through our faith – He is its object and source. It is not about our faith, our own efforts and ability or anything else. It’s all about God. He calls things that do not exist in the natural realm (Romans 4:17). Matthew 16:19 says, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom. Heaven; Whatever you bind on earth will be loosed in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” God binds in heaven, and then we finish it on earth. We get the word “rema” from the Bible. When we listen to God, our faith grows. .”

Practical examples

Let me give you some examples of what it might look like when used as a core part of classroom management.

Dealing with fear

Austin refuses to participate in class discussions or presentations. He constantly interrupts when others are sharing or presenting. You find yourself in a power struggle with him because of this, often to the point of sending him out of the room before it’s his turn.

You ask God to show you what is causing Austin’s behavior, and He shows Austin struggling with fear. Because of this, Austin is creating obstacles so that he doesn’t have to face what he fears. You remember the verse that says, “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of self-control” 2 Timothy 1:7. You start saying this in your classroom – not out loud where your students can do it here, but maybe only you can hear or maybe earlier in the day or when alone before Austin’s class. Then you say, “God did not give Austin a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and self-control.” Finally you ask God to ease Austin’s fears, empower him to participate, and give him self-control during class so he can learn.

Fighting Bullying Through Prayer

Amanda bullies everyone in the class through threats and intimidation. You have attended workshops on bullying. You’ve worked to build a relationship with Amanda so she feels loved and valued, but nothing seems to be working.

Ask God to show you how to pray for Amanda. As you search for her, she starts to show you some things you already know, like how Amanda feels unloved, rejected, and insecure. You know Satan is the one telling Amanda these things because he is the accuser (Revelation 12:10) and the father of lies (John 8:44). You resist Satan’s lies by speaking God’s truth about Amanda: “Amanda is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). She is loved by God and nothing can separate her from that love. (Romans 8:37-39)” Once again, you do not speak this out loud where others can here, but rather in solitude where you, God, and the spiritual environment around you can hear what you have to say.

God shows you how the enemy is working against Amanda through those wounds to intimidate and control others, just as Jezebel did to Elijah in 1 Kings 19. You have already prayed, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” You know that Satan has already been defeated on the cross. Knowing these truths, you can privately declare, “Satan, Jesus has defeated you on the cross. He has disarmed your power. You are already bound in heaven. Jesus is the ruler of my classroom. In Jesus’ name, I Let go of fear and intimidation. You have no place here.” Then ask God to minister to Amanda’s heart.

Mediation for your students

Moderation for your students is one of the most powerful core components of classroom management you can implement.

“Pray fervently in the Spirit, as you always intercede constantly with every form of prayer.” Ephesians 6:18, The Passion Translation

“That student” who has a hard time with self-control, “That student” who has a hard time concentrating, “That student” who has a hard time being kind to others… What will happen to him/her if you start mediating?

James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous man has great power as it works.”

You can ask God to help your students gain self-control. Ask him to focus on his students. Ask him to help your students learn. He made them. He takes care of them. His desire is to see that your needs are met both inside and outside the classroom. Sometimes you may not know what to pray for, but the good news is that the Holy Spirit does! Ask Him to show you how to pray for your students! He knows everything you need!

Prayer is one of the key parts of classroom management that I could never do without! Try applying it, and see what God begins to do!

Effective outcome elements of classroom management

You may think to yourself, “Do you really believe that all of my classroom management challenges are spiritual?” Yes and no. I believe that most of the major challenges you face in your classroom have an invisible dimension; But, we are also human! I believe wholeheartedly that you need core components of classroom management that are both natural and spiritual. They go hand in hand! Imagine how effective your natural classroom management strategies will be as you pave the way through announcements and moderation! This gives your students breathing room for freedom of choice and freedom to learn!

There are many other spiritual examples and principles I could share, but I will save those for other posts. If this seems new and unfamiliar to you, I encourage you to keep an open mind before discounting these strategies. My purpose is not to enter into a theological debate with you, but rather to share principles from God’s Word that “work.”

When I began implementing these key components of classroom management in my classroom, the results were evident. My classroom environment and my students changed – even the most challenging students! Our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever! It means the God of the Bible is working in your life and your students’ lives today! 1 Corinthians 4:20 says, “For the kingdom of God is not in things, but in power.” Jesus has already defeated Satan on the cross! Let him show you how to defeat Satan in your classroom so your students can learn and be free to walk in the destiny God has for them!
