Manmohan Desai (Making The Impossible Possible)
On this day, on 26 February 1937, a child was born in the family of Kalavati and Kikubhai Desai. I pay tribute to this great producer and director, the genius Manmohan Desai. Take this opportunity to share some interesting anecdotes of this great man who believed that “Anhoni ko honi karna hamara kaam hai” (Making the impossible possible is our job).
The early years
Born on February 26, Manmohan Ji was four years old when he started living in a farm in Mumbai. Though born in a Gujarati family, his love and home has always been the city of dreams and dream merchants i.e. Mumbai. His love for the city of Mumbai was often portrayed on screen in his films.
There was a time when neither Khetwadi nor Manmohan Ji’s address was reflected on the city map. In the early 80s, not many people had heard of Khetwadi. Taxi drivers gave blank stares when asked for the address for MKD Films.
His father was a filmmaker who owned Paramount Studios (later Filmalaya) and made films between 1931 and 1941. His father died of a ruptured appendix at the age of 39. The family also had a large bungalow in Versova but the father’s sudden death left huge liabilities and debts.
Manmohan ji mother was very clear, “No, I don’t want to live on debt”. She sold the bungalow and car she owned to pay off the loan. Didn’t sell the studio because that was their monthly income.
Making the impossible possible
The first film directed by Manmohan ji was ‘Chaliya’ which featured actor Raj Kapoor in the lead role. The title song of the film was shot in black and white “Challia Mera Naam”. It turns out that he often elaborated creative ideas and inputs about the plot or plot beneath the well-known landmark restaurant Cafe Naz on the slopes of Malabar Hill.
He didn’t appreciate the idea where the film ended on a sad note. He always believed in happy endings, even if it meant making the impossible possible. Undoubtedly, he was considered a master entertainer whose passion was to make people happy by watching his movies with always happy endings. His career graph became more popular in the years 1960 to 1988.
Although the characters depicted in his films were people from the railway platform, they were mostly common people PorterWaiter inside fate or Anglo Indian from the streets of Bandra Amar Akbar Anthony. The confidence he displayed in each of these characters who later tasted success is truly highly regarded coming from the master entertainer and genius Manmohan Desai.
He was a middle class man. Be it on shooting locations or otherwise, Manmohan ji was known for his hours of afternoon naps. He always felt refreshed and recharged during short naps. After the success of his film Amar Akbar Anthony He bought a posh apartment with modern amenities in the then most expensive area of Mumbai. But, his mind was always on Khetwadi which was a colony of middle class people in central Mumbai.
Amar Akbar Anthony (Storyline)
Manmohan ji gave many hit films in his career but his one film which is loved by many even today. “Amar Akbar Anthony”. I would like to share some interesting anecdotes about this evergreen entertainer that has enthralled millions of viewers even thirty-five years after its release.
Director Manmohan Desai got the idea of the film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ from a news he read in an evening newspaper. An alcoholic man named Jackson was fed up with his life and one day decided to put his three children in a car and leave them at a park. One can say where the story of director Manmohan Desai begins and where the news ends. He twists the story a bit by forgetting the alcohol part and when the father returns, he discovers that all three of his children are missing. In the story, the eldest child is adopted by a Hindu police officer and the other two by a Muslim tailor and a Catholic priest.
My name is Anthony Gonsalves
The inspiration for Anthony came from Desai’s real-life character Antao, a bootlegger who lived near his home in a farm. He used to chat with Desai in his own language, wearing a funny hat. “Desai kaisa hai khennai chha nahi”. Director Desai was very fascinated by her character and decided to showcase her on screen.
In the song ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’ (You see, the whole country of the system is laced with hemoglobin in the atmosphere because you are a sophisticated rhetorician drunk on the abundance of your own eloquence.) spoken by Anthony when he gets out of the Easter Egg is an almost exact quote from British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli’s 1878 speech to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Disraeli (who was referring to William Ewart Gladstone) used the term. “Alcoholic” rather than “narcotic”.
As Superstar Mr. Amitabh Bachchan said: “He (Desai) would first design the ‘things’ he wanted in the film, then he would shoot them and then write (the screenplay) to link them.” He was known to do some crazy stuff but it always worked for him.
If we talk about the famous ‘blood donation’ scene (where three sons of one mother donate blood at once). “It was a medical disaster. Where in the world do you get three people in the same room giving blood transfusions from the same bottle?” Three separate tubes carry the male’s blood into the suspension bottle from where only one tube sends the blood to mother Bharti. The credits end and then the main story begins.
“It was a medical impossibility. But Desai did it, and it worked. When (the scene) opened, there was incredible applause in the theater.” The same creativity was demonstrated by director Manmohan Desai.
One thing is evident in most of Manmohan Desai’s films; He always showed his deep respect for the mother figure. He said, ‘I always talk about ‘Ma Sherowali’ in my film. I think woman is the supreme creation. She is the one who conceives, gives birth to a child after nine months, takes care of her after suffering. He brings new life into the world. I rate them very highly. I am a big believer in Durga, Amba and Lakshmi. His works include films like Naseeb, Suhaag, Parwarish, Coolie, Mard, Desh Premi and Amar Akbar Anthony.
Desai always believed parents above God and, of course, above self. Hurt them and you hurt yourself, was his simple belief that still resonates in the film world today.
A man who strongly believes in “Lost and Found” The formula is missing from this universe and no one can find the formula to replace this master entertainer which is the creativity exhibited by the man Manmohan Desai.
