Redfield Scopes: High Quality for Affordable Price

In 1909 John Hill Redfield founded the Redfield Gun Sight Company to manufacture rifle sights. For many decades Redfield diopter sights were the most popular optical sights on the market. By the late 1940s Redfield was one of the leading American manufacturers of hunting optics along with Leupold.

However, in the last quarter of the XX century, Redfield began to experience increasing difficulties. This is a result of poor management and business strategy planning mistakes as well as market conditions that management could not change even if they wanted to. All of these reasons led Redfield to announce its closure in 1997.

Over the next few years, the company, or rather the brand was sold, bought several times. Among the companies that temporarily owned the brand were Blount, ATK, Mead Optical and ATK again. Some of these tentative owners intended to establish production of redfield scopes in China, but for various reasons (primarily financial) these plans did not materialize as desired.

The rebirth of the Redfield brand

In April of 2008 Leupold & Stevens purchased the intellectual property owned by the company along with the “once iconic” Redfield brand. The official announcement was followed by extremely pessimistic predictions, however, the timing and results put the skeptics to shame. Leupold & Stevens has not only returned Redfield scopes to their rightful place, but also revitalized their position as a manufacturer of rifle scopes made in the USA.

In September of 2009, the first model of the Redfield Revolution rifle scope became available in the U.S. The scope was completely manufactured in Beaverton, Oregon. The body of the Redfield Revolution scope was manufactured on the same CNC machines as the body of the Leupold scope, using the same aviation aluminum alloy 6061-T6.

Thus, when hunters in the XXI century use Redfield scopes on their rifles, they are as confident in using them as their fathers were in the 1960s in favor of this company’s sights. However, the new Redfield scopes had an important advantage over the scopes made in the last century: they were designed with the latest achievements in the field of opto-mechanical technology, which was more than imagined in the XX century.

The price was really competitive for the Revolution rifle scopes. The retail price was $80-100 less than the price of similar Leupold VX-I models. Such a strategy allows Redfield scopes to directly compete in terms of quality and reliability with scopes imported from China in terms of price.

Advantages of a redfield scope

Although cost is important, it is not the main factor when choosing a redfield scope. There is quite a long list of benefits:

  • Redfield scopes are of high quality and have multiple layers of protective coating on all surfaces where the glass comes into contact with air.
  • The optical system delivers bright images, accurate color and contrast across the visible spectrum.
  • The “tunnel effect” does not appear when you change the zoom. The objectives of a redfield scope are clearly distinguishable at any lightning.
  • Any light shadows and reflections are excluded if the exit pupil is in the correct position.
  • The best modern rifle scopes offer over 90% light transmission both day and night. However, high light transmission is useless if there is no great contrast. This helps distinguish the game against the background of dense brush in low light conditions. Redfield scopes fully comply with this requirement.
  • The outer surface of the objective lens and the eyepiece are covered with a hard protective coating resistant to scratches and abrasion.
  • Redfield scopes have a significant advantage in stability because their body is made from a solid piece of metal. The body is made of aluminum and its walls are thick enough to prevent bending. It reliably protects the optical and mechanical parts of the scopes from hits and other forms of mechanical impact.
  • Redfield brand high quality scopes are subjected to matte outer surface anodizing. It is very resistant to scratches.
  • A damping system prevents displacement of the reticle during a shot. Reticle adjustment should work with the highest accuracy. The adjustment option of the reticles with the ability to secure the zero position is a definite advantage when you change the gear type of your rifle.
  • Redfield magnification adjustments are easy to use and adjust even when temperatures are very low. The entire range of adjustment of the scope is overlapped by half a turn of the adjustment ring.

Generally all rifle scopes of the same class have the same image quality, build quality and reliability. The price difference is also explained by the fact that rifle scopes from leading manufacturers have complex electronics inside and are not so much optical scopes as electro-optical devices. I additionally you are paying for the “name”.

Scope of the Redfield revolution

The Redfield Revolution line of rifle scope models includes: 2-7×33, 3-9×40, 3-9×50 and 4-12×40. As already mentioned above, Redfield scopes offer best-in-class image quality. The image is crisp, bright and sharp with the innovative illuminator lens system. The lenses used in redfield scopes have a dielectric coating and vacuum sense. The new technology provides exceptional light transmission even in low light conditions.

Redfield scopes are waterproof and filled with dry nitrogen gas to eliminate the possibility of condensation on the inner surfaces of the lenses. However, in 1947, Leupold was the first company to start filling dry nitrogen gas into rifle scope bodies. They were also the first to use an inert gas mixture of argon and krypton for these proposals.

In addition to all of that, Redfield scopes have a lifetime warranty. Guess what hunters love most about this warranty? They don’t need to use it! Another cool detail about this warranty: Normally the warranty only applies to the original owner, but it doesn’t matter to Redfield whether you are the original owner or not. If something is wrong with the product – the manufacturer will repair it or replace it. The maximum period of product maintenance is 5 days but it does not exceed a day or two (of course not counting the time for shipping).

Let’s take a look at the Redfield Revolution 4-12×40. At a distance of 100 yards the field of view will be 9.5 to 20 feet. Eye relief is 3.7 – 4.9 inches which is more than enough to use the most powerful ammunition.

Accu-range reticle

Their Accu-Renge reticle deserves a detailed description, as Redfiled was one of the first companies to implement Bullet Drop Compensation (BDC) technology into their scopes. The efficiency of the Accu-range reticle was already appreciated by many hunters. This reticle has ballistic points for fast aiming that works with most popular calibers.

I’m not planning to manually duplicate the Redfield Accu-range reticle here. I’ll just note that bullet drop compensation is pre-calculated for two types of ammo.

For the first group (includes cartridges such as 223 Rem with a bullet weight of 40 grams, 243 Win with a bullet weight of 100 grams, 7 mm Remington Mag with a bullet weight of 150 grams, 338 Win Mag with a bullet weight of 200 grams and others) at a distance of 200 yards. The bullet drop compensation calculation is based on data that at a distance of 500 yards the bullet drop can be 35-45 inches.

For the second group (270 WSM cartridge with 130 gram bullet weight, 7mm Rem mag with 140 gram bullet weight, 300 Win mag with 150 gram bullet weight and others) at a distance of 300 yards. . Bullet drop compensation is calculated based on the assumption that bullet drop is less than 35 inches at a distance of 500 yards.

Ballistic hold over points on the Redfield scope’s Accu-Range reticle allow rapid shots at distances of 300/400/500 yards for the first group of cartridges and 400/500/600 yards for the second group. of the cartridge. However, Redfield still recommends sighting the rifle with the selected cartridge before you go hunting.

Redfield’s success

Since many hunters of the older generation associate the Redfield brand with quality and affordable optics, success was expected. Well, these days Redfield scopes released in the 1960s sell for $600 and up on Internet auction sites. At the same time this success was unexpected because most of the buyers were young people who did not know about the past glory of the company.

Many hunters reacted to the novelty with caution. There were many questions on popular forums: “Has anyone used the new Redfield scopes? What do you think about it? It looks like it’s made in America, right? The price is very reasonable”. At first there was not much response. However as the popularity of these scopes grew, reviews became more frequent. They were tested in practice: “It turned out bad when asking for money”, “I bought it and used it in hunting – the picture and exterior are similar to Leupold VX-I, but the price is lower”, “It looks like. Very reliable optics. ” “It’s more durable than others”, “I used it today on a hunt and was very satisfied”, “It’s great for big game, it seems to be self-centering.”

There were many reviews and all of them were positive.

Redfield Revenge and Battlezone scopes

Logically, the success achieved in many markets has pushed the company to expand its range of Redfield scopes for hunters. Today Redfield Revenge scopes that deliver bright and crystal clear images include five models: 2-7×34, 3-9×42, 3-9×52, 4-12×42 and 6-18×44. All scopes (except the 2-7×34) have a built-in Accu-Ranger ballistic system (Hunter, Sabot, Varmint and Crossbow modifications) that allows you to determine target distance at ranges up to 600 yards. It is very easy to use.

Like the Revolution – the previous model, the Revenge scopes have a waterproof body that is filled with nitrogen. Multicoated lenses provide maximum light transmission and of course, these scopes are also covered by a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.

Tactical shooters can find all the futures they need in Redfield Battlezone scopes. They are designed for AR, modern sporting or precision bolt action rifles and come in two variations: TAC.22 2-7×34 and 3-9×42.

If you are deciding which rifle scope brand to give your preference and your budget is limited, then Redfield scopes will be your best choice: you get the highest quality at an affordable price.
