Easy Beginner Guitar Lessons – My First Steps to Learning Minor Chords on the Guitar
There’s a real art to playing rhythm guitar, I don’t mean playing some messy chords in a disorganized group; Playing good rhythm ‘requires the ability to let go of unnecessary notes so that important notes can be heard’.
If you’re a frustrated guitarist trying to learn guitar chords, you’ll surely be happy to learn that playing chords doesn’t have to be complicated and physically demanding.
If you’re a songwriter or advance guitarist, minor chords can be a wonderful chord structure at your disposal. Since ‘our ears remember but our eyes don’t’, you can change the whole feel of a song by changing the major chord to a relative minor.
Here is an example of substituting a minor chord in place of an existing major chord:
Our fundamental progress…
G /// | C /// | D /// | G /// ||
becomes…
M /// | C /// | D /// | Em /// ||
If you play the two progressions you’ll notice how the sound of the Em chord changes the feel of the chord sequence.
What we did here was replace the G major chord with its relative minor Em.
A relative minor chord can be found by playing a bass note three frets lower than the major chord you want to replace.
For example: Using an open G major chord, we move the G note to the sixth string, the third fret back three frets… Now the new bass note is the open E note; So the relative minor chord for G major is E minor.
Our next project is learning how to spell all the minor chords.
Starting with the key of ‘C’ major we will learn how to spell the C minor chord.
Step 1. Using notes from the C major scale:
CDEFGABC
Step 2. Apply the 1-b3-5 formula to create a minor chord.
In this example we will use the first, flatted third and fifth notes of the C major scale to build our C minor chord.
Cm = C, Eb, G
Applying this same procedure to the other keys we arrive at the following conclusion…
Minor chords in sharp keys:
Gm = G, Bb, D
Dm = D, F, A
Am = A, C, E
Em = E, G, B
Bm = B, D, F#
F#m = F#, A, C#
C#m = C#, E, G#
Important: In such cases where the note needs to be flattened there is a sharp; A flat cancels a sharp out, so the note is played naturally.
Here is a sample in the key of D:
D major scale = DEF#-GABC#-D Applying the 1-b3-5 minor formula to this scale would cancel out the F# flattened third rule so we would spell D minor DFA.
Applying this concept to flat keys we will arrive at the following minor chords.
Fm = F, Ab, C
Bbm = Bb, Db, F
Ebm = Eb, Gb, Bb
Abm = Ab, Cb, Eb
Dbm = Db, Fb, Ab
When you come to Cb or Fb it can be confusing; The note Cb is the same pitch as B; while the Fb note is the same pitch as E.
I know you’ll enjoy the little string flavor; Try replacing some of your major chord sounds with your new minor chords and enjoy playing your guitar.
