## Freecell PowerMoves Explained

Most people understand the rules of Freecell, but not everyone does

Freecell PowerMoves. Understanding PowerMoves is one of the most important keys to winning Freecells, and knowing how they work will increase your chances of winning Freecells.

A Freecell powermove (also known as a supermove), is simply a shortcut move. It allows

You move a sequence of cards in one move instead of doing multiple individual tasks

trick

It’s not a special trick though.

It’s just a shortcut, instead of moving all the cards in one move

Lots of moves using available freecells and empty columns.

Based on how many cards you can move in a Supermove sequence

Freecells and empty columns are available. Some freestyle games implement this

incorrectly, and let you move any number of cards in order.

But this is wrong. If you cannot move the sequence using individual card moves,

Then you cannot move the sequence using PowerMove.

Freecell SuperMove uses empty columns and freecells effectively

To ensure that you can move the maximum number of cards possible. How to work

As many cards can be moved, the following formula is used:

(1 + number of empty freecells) * 2 ^ (number of empty columns)

This is easy to understand by looking at the following chart:

Empty Columns Empty Freecells Card Sequence Length

0 0 1

0 1 2

0 2 3

0 3 4

0 4 5

1 0 2

1 1 4

1 2 6

1 3 8

1 4 10

2 0 4

2 1 8

2 2 12

2 3 16

2 4 20

This assumes you are moving the sequence to a non-empty column. if you

Moving to an empty column, then the column you moved doesn’t count

As an empty column.

A freecell powermove can always be broken down into several individual moves.

Suppose you have 1 empty column, and 1 empty freecell. From your chart above

Let’s see that we can move a sequence of 4 cards. Suppose we want to move 9,8,7,6

Sequence in 10. The moves will proceed as follows:

- Move 6 to Freecell (now an empty column, no empty Freecell)
- Move 7 to an empty column (no more empty columns, and no empty freecells)
- Move 6 to 7 (no more empty columns, and an empty freecell)
- Move 8 to freecell (no more empty columns, and no empty freecells) li>
- Move 9 to 10 (no more empty columns, and no more empty freecells)
- Move 8 to 9 (no more empty columns, and an empty freecell)
- Move 6 to a freecell (no more empty columns, no empty freecells)
- Move 7 to 8 (now an empty column, and no empty freecell)
- Move 6 to 7 (now an empty column, and an empty freecell)

So in this example, powermove has saved us time by allowing us to do 1 move

instead of 9.

There are a few things to note in this example:

- Freecells and empty columns are used temporarily. At the end of the powermove, the number of empty freecells and columns is the same as at the beginning of the powermove.
- Freecells and empty columns are used as efficiently as possible. There is no way that any more cards could have been moved.
- Only empty freecells and empty columns are used. Cards in other stacks are not used as temporary storage space.

This last point deserves special attention. Supermove will only use freecells

and empty columns. This table does not account for any other cards. this

This means you can often move long sequences by breaking moves

By yourself, or doing lots of power moves.

In the example above, if there were an extra 9 in the table with the correct color,

A very long sequence could be moved. 8,7,6 will be the order

Moved to the other 9 first. Then we can move another 4 cards using normal

powermove (because we still have an empty column and a freecell). So we can now

Move 9,10,J,Q to a king, and then move 8,7,6 to 9 again. So by

By breaking the sequence into 2 moves, we are able to move a sequence of 7

instead of 4.

Being aware of this short burst of supermove will allow you to move longer

sequences, which help a lot in winning some tough freesale deals.

Another thing to be aware of with SuperMove is how important empty columns are

are If you look back at the chart above, you’ll see that there are a lot of empty columns

Valued at Freesale. Four empty freecells let you move a sequence of 5 moves,

While two empty freecells and two empty columns let you move a sequence of 12!

So try and clear the columns as soon as possible!
