Purpose of Taekwondo Forms
You just tested for a new belt… now what? A new form, perhaps…also called patterns, poms, or hyungs. Now, you go through the process of completing your forms before the next belt test. You may ask yourself, what is the purpose of all these forms?
As a taekwondo practitioner for over 30 years, I have come full circle with the purpose of practicing objects in class. In fact, I’ve done some full circles in terms of forms. In my younger days as a competitive point style fighter, I didn’t like forms much. I practiced them, and I did well. In fact, I did really well in every competition I competed in. I was really interested in sparring. I have lived for that.
I found all sorts of ways to justify that forms have nothing to do with fighting. For example, boxers don’t do forms. Kickboxers don’t do forms. Wrestlers don’t form. Other games don’t do forms. Why should I pay so much attention to forms? I am as logical a thinker as you can get. I will justify and calculate everything. Maybe that’s why he got an engineering degree. However, I retired after a year.
I’ve heard others argue that boxers, kickboxers, and wrestlers have forms. They are just done in a different way. Oh, such a sad attempt to create equality. Here’s my response- those other sports have combinations and drills, like we do in taekwondo, but they still don’t do memorized sequences of techniques that are 15 to 30 steps long.
Well, here is where I finally made my first full circle. Taekwondo is not a sport. So it should not be compared with other games. I first started in the ITF, and now I’m in the WTF, and still… I think of our practice as an art rather than a sport, the competition I did and our academy still does. Taekwondo has a sports component, in fact most martial arts have a sports component. Even Tai Chi has competition.
At this point, I realized that it is not fair to compare us as taekwondo practitioners to boxers. Taekwondo and most martial arts are centered around building yourself from the inside out. To be a person of great character. A person who lives by certain tenets – courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit. Martial arts were created thousands of years ago to protect the land, and emperors, as well as for personal protection when traveling great distances.
Ancient history describes the training of warriors with memorized sequences of techniques—forms. These forms were often used to keep warriors mentally sharp and in shape when training solo. Forms allow you to visualize attacks from multiple opponents. Imagine, you are a monk, 3000 years ago, many weeks… traveling alone. You need the means to develop physically and mentally. Forms will allow you to visualize attackers, while you defend yourself with explosive techniques. Every time you execute a technique in your form, you execute it with power, focus, and precision. Training develops your technique through shear repetition and your mental focus and discipline.
Now it’s easy to fall off the old warrior wagon when you’re competing. I have training partners, and equipment to practice with. I don’t need to train alone with forms to develop my skills for the sport. Again, I have justified why my Taekwondo forms can be put on the back burner in my training.
Ah, haha!!! It finally hit me. It was during my first full circle that I was struck with the importance of forms. First, let me explain that forms have many advantages-
1. Taekwondo forms help you strengthen specific techniques by regularly executing them in a powerful fashion.
2. Taekwondo disciplines your body to control your breathing by exhaling and inhaling in between.
3. Taekwondo forms teach your body better balance by executing kicks, blocks and punches with power, but then maintaining proper posture, and foot and hand positions without involving your stance. Good technique is the most important of the forms because it challenges us the most with coordination and balance.
4. Taekwondo forms provide us with a means to “empty your cup”. Emptying your cup is symbolic of life. There is only so much stress and so much work that you can allow your mind and body to handle. Forms is an activity that allows you to release some of that mentally consuming stress. Practice forms for 30 minutes after a long stressful day, and you will understand the true meaning of “emptying your cup”.
Now that’s not a big advantage of forms. A huge benefit goes back to the ancient warriors. It’s funny how the biggest benefits are the long-tested times. Benefit – view. 90% of all Olympic athletes are visualizers. 90% of successful business people in this country have imagined their success.
So how do you tap into this invaluable quality? You practice! Visualization is an art that can be mastered. If you perform your Taekwondo forms in a mundane fashion, focusing only on technique, balance and breathing, you are missing a huge component. To develop your skills as a powerful visualizer, you must visualize every attack you’re blocking and every target you’re hitting. This mental exercise is so powerful, it should carry through the rest of your life.
There are many books on the law of attraction, so I won’t write on it, but this is the basic view of the law. If entrepreneurs do it, business people do it, Olympic athletes do it, ancient warriors did it, and it made them successful, I’d say it’s worth doing.
“Wait a minute…I’m in martial arts for self-defense, not for a business success course.” So be it. Each step in your form is a defense or counter attack for an attacker. The more you visualize those attacks and your defenses and counters against them, the more efficient and natural you will become, should you face a similar attack. This is why you learn many forms in Taekwondo. Each form gives you a known perspective on a particular attack. The more forms you know, the more tools you have to use mentally and physically.
Second full circle, now complete. I’m sure I’ll do another full circle soon. In fact, I look for a reason to do these circles, because it allows me to grow as a Taekwondo practitioner. As many great people before me have said, “When you’re not growing, you’re rotting.” This is a natural law of nature.
