Self Discipline Is Not All You Need For Healthy Finances

Recently, someone told me “If only I had discipline, I could get ahead financially”. What struck me as odd was that this man had recently retired from the US Marine Corps. How much more discipline can this man take? Then it dawned on me that discipline isn’t the only thing we need for strong healthy personal finances. Perhaps self-discipline only contributes a small percentage of our financial success. Here’s what I found:

— You need the right equipment —

I love watching commercials on TV. Recently there was an ad featuring a man showing off a handcrafted framing hammer his father had given him as a gift. But does he use it to build a house? Of course not! He hands out the most powerful nail gun I’ve ever seen and proudly proclaims that this is what it really takes to do the job.

What tools will you use in your personal home management? Do you build a deck with a table knife and a plastic screwdriver? Do you hammer nails with a pipe wrench or the sole of your shoe? Do you spend your hard earned money without a plan or purpose?

— You need the right budget —

To get started you need a good working monthly budget. Not just the budget. Most budgets are too frustrating to ever work or use. If you use the wrong budget you can also see the wood with the table knife. Boy, your hands hurt after a while.

I prefer to use a monthly cash spending plan called a “zero-based budget.” It’s simple, easy to use and it works every time. This can be done on paper or within an MS-Excel spreadsheet. First, keep your income (take home pay) on top. Second, set aside a little for emergencies and savings. Third, pay all your basic expenses such as accommodation, food, transport and clothing. Finally pay off your credit card debt and miscellaneous expenses. Spend **every** dollar. Your income minus your expenses must equal zero or you have to go back to reallocating somewhere else. Plan a cash expense for each month. Every month is different so don’t try to make that horrible unrealistic magic budget that you can’t work with.

— You need the right cash management system —

Want to give yourself a 12-18% raise without increasing your current salary by a dime? Use cash! When you use real cash (not your credit card, debit card or ATM card) you’ll spend 12-18% less and feel more in control of your finances and your life. You will not starve nor do you have to do without. Although it may not harm some of us to go on a diet, you will not suffer any ill effects.

The cash envelope system has been around for decades. It was most commonly used in the 1930s and 1940s. For example, Joe and Suzy used to sit at their kitchen table on the first day of every month. They would take Joe’s paycheck, cash it and distribute the money in several envelopes. They had one envelope for rent or mortgage, one for gas and electricity, one for vacations, one envelope for gas for their car, one envelope for groceries, and one envelope for eating out. They spent only these envelopes and if the envelope was empty they transferred money from another envelope without it. It is the simplest and most effective budgeting system ever. A modified version of this system is now taught by consumer financial education specialists and used by families today.

— You need the right mindset —

Personal values and principles play a large role in healthy personal finances. We draw our boundaries from our values and principles. Do you feed your children candy and ice cream only when they demand it at all hours of the day or night? Of course not.

Our local electronics store has to sweep its floors every night. They have to remove saliva and poop stains from the front of the big 47-inch plasma TVs. Customers come into the store, stop in front of large television sets and drool on the floor. It happens all the time. Our inner child comes out to play when we least expect it.

So, why do we let our inner child rage when we go to the local store, car dealership, gold pro shop, or restaurant? Well, you might think I’m hitting a little below the belt here and maybe I am. But think about it. That grocery store kid inside of us needs just as much love and care as our outer kids. We need to establish and hold ourselves to the same healthy boundaries that we apply to those around us.

Don’t get confused. A boundary is not the same as self-discipline. A boundary is a line we will not cross and we will respect. We always set boundaries. Self-discipline is a commitment to staying true to our boundaries, values, and principles. Many have all the self-discipline they need. In fact, we have all the discipline in the world today. What many lack is an understanding of our boundaries.

It is said that healthy personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge. Simple tools you use can help you control the behavior you’re looking for. We should settle for the right tools, not just any tools. Keep it simple and you will know financial prosperity and abundance for life.
