What’s a Butkus?
Dive play is the most basic play in the game. Objective: Gain a yard. The quarterback takes the snap, pivots, handing the football to the fullback—who slams the line of scrimmage, head on. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty, and it rarely creates a big game, but it builds confidence by creating a clear purpose and accomplishing it. Simply put, if you don’t have the drive and tenacity to gain a yard, how in the world do you expect to score a touchdown?
Finding something is supposed to be what you’re looking for! Finding your buttkus, basically means finding something you already have. It’s already a part of you, perhaps hidden deep within your psyche or more likely, just hiding in plain site. Right under your nose – in your heart.
In Kevin Costner’s film “A Field If Dreams,” his character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice from a cornfield saying, “If you make it, he will come.” He is told to trust whispers and listen to feelings. The voice wants him to listen and then take action—completely in faith.
While corn on the cob may not be calling to you, I’m sure you’ve thought about it while showering or driving your car. A gut feeling that says take action.
Your buttocks, I say with a wink, reach around and find your rear end just a little to the south. With both hands I can add! Maybe you haven’t found your Butkus yet, because you’re sitting on it!
So what is Butkus?
No, it’s not But-Kis, it’s pronounced But-Kus. You say it deliberately, and always with attitude. If you’re a sports fan you’ve probably heard the name, Dick Butkus. In fact most people in North America have heard that name, although they may not know who or what it is.
And yes, it is a strange name.
However, there is nothing ridiculous about the image or iconic status that this name represents. As a four-year-old, when I first heard the name and saw the NFL image of Dick Butkus, I was intrigued. Actually it was more like, “in awe”.
NFL Film States; “Dick Butkus played football with religious fervor, with an unrelenting passion, not for excellence, but to dominate and demoralize. For Dick Butkus, it was never a game, but a street-fight, a place for all, a no-holds-barred battle. Was a devastating defender and the NFL is full of stories of people who surpassed him. He was a force of uncanny proportions; he was Moby Dick in a goldfish bowl. His career stands as one of the most consistent acts of destruction. Committed to anyone, anywhere, anytime on the football field.”
Dick Butkus is remembered as the toughest man to ever play pro football. A boy who, whatever; would not leave. He never won a championship or a Superbowl; Hell his team was so bad they never even made it to the playoffs. However, that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the best to ever play NFL football.
Myself, playing football at the age of twelve, I wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything from his pigeon-legged hulking walk to the color of his uniform was amazing. It all captured my imagination. His linebacker stance, ready to pounce like a mountain lion, was terrifying. But when he moved, fully committed, he launched himself with reckless abandon; He was not like any other player on the field.
Butkus, for me, became a metaphor for the movement and a symbol of effort and achievement. No matter what the odds are, you must never give up. If I called my Butkus, I knew what to do, and when to do it.
Now that I’ve painted a picture of what Butkus looked like and how important he was, I have to tell you, I didn’t get it right away. In fact, it took me thirty years to understand this. I had to look deep into my memories to find something I thought I already knew.
And that’s the rub! “Nothing means anything if you don’t know how to use it” is a topic for later discussion, but for now, it’s safe to say; Just knowing something doesn’t make it valuable.
Knowledgeable people are routinely overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated not only by others, but – often by themselves. Michelangelo, the great artist (not the Ninja Turtles) says “The greatest danger for most of us is not to aim high and fall short; but to aim too low and miss the mark!”
Are you getting the bottom line you asked for? Looking for success in all the wrong places? Were you taught, like me, that you suffered for years to fulfill those opportunities. Are they out of your control? Were you asked to learn more, create skills you didn’t have, and go places someone else set? Then, when you arrived, said again, it will be difficult, in fact life was difficult. You need to be tough and learn to face what you don’t want, – to get what you want! nonsense
I say, whatever you want – you want, what you are looking for is looking for you. What you want, doesn’t just exist, more in fact, it already exists within you. It’s not hard, but yes, it’s intense and it needs your full attention! You’ve heard, I believe in the natural laws of the universe? I would argue that the “law of attraction” does not exist as an external magnet to get what you want, but rather it synchronizes your desire to bring you more of what you already have.
In the movie ‘The Lion King’, Mufasa called his son Simba down from the heavens to “Remember who you are!” Your job is to find, perhaps remember, “what” you already have. Will lead you to find your Butkus.
that hit; Remember who you are! Find your words, find your??? In life!
Just like basic dive play, create a purpose you can count on – that builds confidence. Keep it simple, something as warm as a dog. Guaranteed to get a yard when you need it. The act of feeling good can put you in the right frame of mind to start paying attention to what’s important.
It’s not about finding what works in life, no, it’s about finding your happiness. Believe me, if my dream was a boy named Dick Butkus, what would you want, could someone be crazy? Open the door to your desires, listen to the realm of your dreams and then allow all people, places and things to come to you.
