What Would Plato Think of Prozac?

Each person is unique and it is that individuality from which we derive strength as a whole. We should use such advantages to our advantage. Plato often wrote about this in The Republic, that each member of society should do what he or she does well and be freed from the responsibility that others may do what they do not well. By using this method, individuals and society will benefit the most. Why haven’t we considered this wise counsel in our culture? Instead we often hire people who are unsuitable in terms of patience, competence and ability. Who benefits? Does a football team that really wants to win a game do that? Whatever; A guy with strong legs and a weak build should be a kicker, not a lineman, because he’ll only be good for one game.

Yet as our world becomes more PC, we seem more concerned about hurting feelings in the real world and try to make everyone equal, people are not equal; Not genetically and certainly not through different experiences of upbringing. For example I am a terrible accountant and could be good at that but it would be a living hell for me to try. It wouldn’t serve anyone if I was assigned to that position, would it? An accountant may be less suited to activities that I excel at.

We tend to judge and label people with disorders or categorize them and place them in a preconceived place by society instead of seeing them as individuals. Schools are too quick to write students off as ADHD and put them on Prozac. We need to find out where the higher qualities can do the most good. From our studies of different people we found that lower intelligence levels find themselves happier in repetitive tasks.

We know that “A” type personalities make bad accountants and don’t like fine details. So what happens to people with ADHD, we know they don’t necessarily lack intelligence. So why is it a disorder if the person shows signs of high intelligence, after all isn’t that a sign of strength and positive traits? An ADHD person may not always score highly on the English section of the SAT test, but we know they’re not stupid. So take a person who is smart, but indifferent. What would they be best suited for? What do they excel at and what would they be best suited for as a profession?

People with ADHD usually don’t have the opportunity to get many certificates or degrees, they hate school. It probably feels like torture to them, so we need to find out what their genetic makeup needs and you win, in fact we all win. Or we can continue to classify them as possessors of a weak brain with an intractable disorder and then pump drugs into their bodies to alter the natural flow of their individual thoughts. We don’t pay enough attention to the issues of ADHD and bi-polar disorder, (there’s that word again) we don’t take into account that our youth are being given incredible amounts of prescription drugs like Rydalin (sp?) and Prozac. And they impact the learning ability and actual intelligence levels of our children and young adults because of the brain power that is wasted on mood control and babysitting drugs as I call them at this age.

Carnegie’s recent report is interesting in that it talks about the problems of bringing productivity and ethics to the workplace starting in schools, and is a valuable study even if it is a prediction of the past and a mission for the future. The newest problem of the current decade may not be considered; That our miss use of drugs in the minds of our students is hurting our ability to reach that lofty goal. It’s a very optimistic approach to relaxing the bar on productivity, ethics and expectations, but not a very real-world one in terms of the reality of over-medicating all parents, teachers and public purposes. People just aren’t very concerned about these issues and we’re artificially brainwashing millions of students every year as a way to calm down disorganized, high energy, ADHD, bi-polar kids. Wanting order in the classroom and being able to teach a large group of students is a noble and worthy cause, but I don’t see the long-term benefits of denying what it is to be human and what normal behavior is. disorder There may be 1-2% who need some form of medication, but in some schools the number of children taking medication is 13-17%, which is not good for the flow of thought in children and teenagers. Middle school reform is one of the most difficult challenges in today’s metro areas.

The American School Board Journal also touches on this topic and has a recommended reading list on these drug use topics. I think it is possible to change the direction and current course.

Accountability in action – a blueprint for learning; By Douglas B. Reeves.

Conflicting Missions?-Teachers Unions and Educational Reform; By Tom Lovelace.

Motivation and Learning Strategies for College Success – A Self-Management Approach, by Myron H Dembo.

We can build schools now or prisons later. But no matter how many schools you build, you must not obstruct the flow of ideas in the children’s minds. Children with high energy or learning differently should be cultivated and engaged in activities to burn off that excess energy through exercise. It’s much better than artificially slowing down their systems until it’s absolutely necessary. What does Prozac cause in children? Well, I suggest you read the book; “Living on Prozac” If you doubt some of what we’re saying here and it doesn’t stop at schools, 17% of the US population takes this stuff, here’s an idea. Prozac takes 30 days to start working so obviously this chemical is changing once it reaches critical mass, which means it’s changing everything. A fraternity at a major medical college receives a list of women taking Prozac so they can date them. The fraternity has an incredible record of 86% of those girls going out on the first date. So much for these scientific white papers field studies, maybe these guys are onto something? Logic seems to point to a drug, which takes the edge off, lowers inhibitions and causes somewhat irrational behavior. Either that or these guys are super studs? You be the judge, but is it a drug that causes such behavior for our children?

The human brain is usually fully formed by the age of 6, but with so many children on mind-altering drugs before the age of 6, is this wise? So the first thing we need in our studies is to allow the brain to flow and that starts with nurturing our students. We must resist closing our children’s minds, we have enough adults who have already closed their minds, for example see how some of these people drive? Learn about it.
