Stress Management for Students
“Mom, I’m too sick to go to school today.” We joke about faking illness to avoid school, but illness isn’t always an excuse. The stresses students face every day can be just as damaging as those their parents face. Yet stress management for students is not as readily available as stress management for adults.
Charts to show “who is affected by stress” list occupations. On a scale of 1 to 10, police officers rate 7.7 and teachers rate 6.2 – but students are not rated. “Student” is not considered a profession. Online searchers type in a phrase like “teacher job + stress reduction” and get reasonable responses. Type in “stress management for students,” and the response is pretty minimal.
Too sick to go to school?
Stressors can and do make students sick. Stress triggers the “fight or flight” response, and the body immediately prepares. It provides an extra supply of adrenaline for short-term survival. This puts functions such as bowel movements on temporary hold. It redirects blood to the muscles. It dilates the pupil of the eye to detect small movements. The heart speeds up the delivery of oxygen to the muscles. All this and more happens in a few moments so that we can fight or “run like crazy”.
If the body prepares, and the student sits still, the body must undo its preparation. Lack of opportunities for stress management, it can lead to illness.
Sick enough to excel in school?
Most students find that eustress is a positive aid in school. Sure, too much stress can cause some students to freeze up during exams, but the right amount of eustress can get the best out of students.
While stress management for students should be prepared for specific stressors, some of them are actually – or can be – eustress stressors.
Consider the following seven (7) stresses.
1. Academics: Academic pressure can be painful if allowed to happen. Through stress management, however, it can be eustress that prompts greater achievements. In this case, stress management for students demands building on academic successes. A peak performance award can encourage greater academic excellence.
2. Dating: Dating is often the focus of student life, so stress management for students needs to address both the stress and problems of the dating game.
3. Environment: School environment can be troublesome if students are left to manage on their own. Planned activities designed for early adjustment, and periods of relaxation can go a long way in introducing eustress to your stress management for students.
4. Extracurricular: Many students naturally seek extracurricular activities, and find them a source of eustress. Others feel pressured to engage in them, and suffer instead. Stress management for students requires careful selection of activities, and a balance between these activities, school life, family life, and part-time work.
5. Peers: Peer pressure Peer pressure can be a source of eustress or distress depending on how readily students accept it. Students who want stress management will want to establish strong beliefs, and stick to them.
6. Time Management: Stress management for students must address scheduling, as deficiencies in this area can affect most or all other areas of a student’s life. Easier for some than others, getting into the habit of carrying a daily planner and sticking to it can eliminate many problems.
7. Parents: Unfortunately, parents themselves are to blame for a portion of student stress. It is well known that students, as they grow older, seek a greater degree of independence from their parents. This is necessary if they want to become mature adults. At the same time, conflict can lead to major crises on both sides of the equation. If you want success from efforts at stress management for students, you need to shine a spotlight on the eustress of the parent/student relationship.
Students can do a lot to manage their stress just by eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. They can add to that by creating a schedule with regular waking and sleeping hours.
Best first aid?
Exercise is perhaps the best means of stress management for students. It’s also simple. When feelings of utter helplessness hit, exercise feels like a helping hand. When students feel lashing out at someone or something close to them, the exercise redirects those feelings into appropriate channels. When students feel their brains have stopped working, exercise can restart the engines.
These 2 simple exercises provide first aid stress management for students.
1. Get up from your seat, walk quickly to the shower room, and cover your face with cold water. Splash it six or seven times, and include your eyes.
2. Leave your seat, and go for a five minute walk. Consciously relax your muscles as you walk, and breathe deeply in and out—as deep as you can without straining.
Chronic stress management for students should include a regular, daily exercise regime. Exercise releases emotions like frustration and anger. Exercise also reduces stress-induced adrenaline, and produces endorphins that increase eustress.
If you are a student, or are providing stress management to students, make regular exercise a priority.
