Tweetadder, Hootsuite or Socialoomph? How To Make Best Use of Social Media Management Applications

There are at least four widely used social media management applications available now – Hootsuite, Socialoomph, Tweetadder and Tweetdeck. Each claim to offer everything you need. But in practice it doesn’t work like that. You need to cherry pick which functions you want from each app. So here are set actions from each app that can work well to manage all your social media activities.

And why not expand your footprint and cherry-pick, with different tools? It also prevents you from becoming too dependent on one application provider. Plus it lets you spread the all-important patient of programmed tweeting, which always requires a prudent approach to avoid the dreaded Twitter de-activation. So let’s see how to get the best out of each tool?

1. Tweetadder – Let’s you program Twitter direct messages but their real point of difference is the search for multiple targets to follow, based on the keywords you select. Some great geekery in the Twitterland API gets you thousands of goals. Then you can program how and when to follow, at what daily levels.

There can be a temptation to create a large target list until you are limited with your keywords. It’s actually much better to do this for one keyword, in small bursts of a few hundred targets at a time. Then see who you are following and who is following you back. There’s also a neat app to decide how long you’ll wait to follow – and unfollow if the follow isn’t followed back within your chosen one-day limit.

2. Tweetdeck – Lets you display multiple accounts together and select the content and areas you want to see. Not very innovative in our opinion.

3. Hootsuite – Lets you display multiple accounts like tweetdeck, but more on social media. Easy to retweet and track your direct message. But there are two differences that we absolutely love about Hootsuite. The first is a ‘Hootlet’ that you stick in your browser bar. It allows you to capture the web page you want to tweet to your followers, to your Facebook pages, etc. It’s very simple to add a page title, title, reduced url and often even a thumbnail visual – all with one click. On your hootlet button. You can then select the accounts in your Hootsuite lists that you don’t want to send the page details to.

It lets you add some of your own text. And it has a box for you to add a secondary url that you want to highlight in the viewer. This is great for multiple tweeting of news or new insights. But beware of two things that can get you banned from Twitter – one is using that secondary url in a direct affiliate link or cloak. Better to use your own web page urls and then redirect. The second thing to watch out for is re-editing the hotlet to highlight the high profile @username. And if you put it back in the edit at first, Twitter’s virtual police monitors will ban all your accounts on the hotlet. In a heartbeat, without appeal.

So it’s best to use hotlets to spread a wider level of new content to your audience. And give proper credit to the sources of the pages. Second, Hootsuite lets you run programmed distributions of tweets. Using Excel columns and varying dates isn’t easy to manage, but it lets you drive important messages when you choose.

4. Socialoomph – It doesn’t give you the best search, or the most account-viewing interface, but it has a wide range of innovative functions, including multiple blogging. And it lets you run large lists of tweets and Facebook messaging programs for much longer than Hootsuite.

Text files are also easy to set up. And they will compress long urls for you in their software. Be careful to use the same url (even if it’s shorter), for more than one account in programmed tweets. Twitter will block that tweet in all your programs and, again, you risk deactivating that account. We prefer the Socialoomph function for url shortening, as you can select your own new codename to use across your entire web footprint and therefore stay close to your brand or topic.

But, once again, use it for your own web pages and not just to hide those unstable affiliate links. You can also set up email monitors so you know if your accounts are being liked, retweeted, etc.

So under their monthly subscription rates, it’s worth investing in more than one service. Be prepared to need a few more hours per week to stay on top of your programs, but it will be worth it to accelerate your entire social interaction strategy to a completely different level of impact and coverage.
