We Know the Secrets to Achieving Success – Why Don’t We Apply Them?

Amazon.com has over 141,000 books listed under ‘Success’ and they all sell like hot cakes. Millions of people spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to listen to motivational speakers about the laws of success. However, very few people actually reach high levels of success. Why is that? Why do some people understand and apply the Laws of Success, and others don’t?

There are many factors that separate those who achieve high levels of success from those who have the Law of Success knowledge, but never achieve success. Let’s use Joe Public and Jane Civilian as examples. Both Joe and Jane have attended motivational speaking events on the Laws of Success and read many books on success. Joe is still working at his factory job, while Jane has achieved a high level of success and is now living well on residual income. Why didn’t anyone succeed?

1. Instant gratification. Joe tried the principles he had learned and after a few weeks of seeing no results, he gave up. Joe expected instant results and when he didn’t get them, he decided the principles didn’t work.

Jane never gave up on principles. She had complete faith in them and made them part of her daily ritual.

2. Lack of compelling reason. who lacked the burning desire necessary to manifest wealth. He didn’t have a strong enough reason to take the time to reprogram his thought processes. He didn’t want enough success.

Jane had a deep, burning desire for success. She had experienced poverty and did not like it. He promised to achieve a great level of success.

3. Self-sabotage. Joe holds on to the faith that was instilled in him at a young age. One may fall victim to sayings like “money doesn’t grow on trees”, or “life is a struggle, you have to work hard to make ends meet”. These types of limiting beliefs can make you believe that you don’t deserve success. Those who fear that success will bring great responsibility and stress. This may be enough to sabotage his own success.

Jane also had limited faith. He identified them and analyzed them. She couldn’t think of a good reason for the beliefs, so she turned them into their positive opposites, wrote down new beliefs, and reaffirmed the positive beliefs on a daily basis until the new beliefs were absorbed into her.

4. Avoid risk. Who is too afraid that he will fail and ashamed of himself that he will not take the risk. He feels more secure working for someone else and collecting his steady pay cheque.

Jane was passionate about developing, achieving and excelling. She looked for opportunities that would take her to the next level. Failure was not an option for him.

5. Negative attitude. Joe had many excuses for why he couldn’t achieve success, such as, “I can’t do it, it’s too hard”, or “I can’t afford it, it’s too expensive”.

Jane’s attitude towards success was positive. If others can do it, so can she, and if it’s too expensive, she finds some way to pay for it.

Success comes from a mind set. Have full faith in what you are doing and if you persevere you will get there. It’s about constantly developing your brain and learning more and more skills.

However, this still leaves the question. Joe Public knows about the mindset of success and what it takes to be successful. He is reading success books and attending motivational speeches. He knows he can change his mind. He chooses not to. Why? Is it laziness? Is it a lack of faith?

The answer can be found on the second page of the author’s preface to Think and Grow Rich: “…Mr. Carnegie proved that his formula will work for anyone who is ready for it.” Joe wasn’t ready for it and he never could be.

Something clicked in Jane. Something about his experience in poverty lit a fire under him. The pain of poverty was so great for Jane that it created in her a great, burning desire never to experience that pain again. He had determination, perseverance and a desperation to achieve success. Joe may never experience the kind of trigger that makes achieving success almost an obsession.

This is the difference.
