What Does the Bible Say About Giving Gifts at Christmas?
Gift giving at Christmas goes back to the gifts of the Magi, which were the wise men who gave gifts to Jesus when he was born. They were led by the Holy Spirit to follow the Eastern Star to Bethlehem to witness the birth of Jesus. And when they saw him, they worshiped him and gave him gifts. Matthew 2:10-11 says, “When they came home, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Although we have this scripture to support gift-giving during Christmas, the tradition of gift-giving has gotten out of hand. We probably all agree that buying gifts for our loved ones and friends has caused us a lot of financial pain.
We want to overextend ourselves because we want to make a big impression and make ourselves look good in their eyes. We wake up at 3:00 a.m. to be the first in line to battle others for the best deals at retail stores on “Black Friday.” It is okay to want to save money on our gifts, but God never intended for these things to happen. When the wise men gave gifts to Jesus, it was because He was our Lord and Savior who came into the world to save us. Not because they wanted to impress others. So what does the Bible say about gift giving?
We are to give gifts to glorify God. Matthew 6:1-4 says, “Be careful not to do your “righteous works” before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. You who are in need, do not trumpet and proclaim, as the hypocrites do.” will be honored by the people in the synagogues and in the streets. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be secret. Then you will see the secret things. Your father will reward you.” This scripture should be applied to our Christmas gifts, because we are to give from our hearts, not for show. We must be sure to teach our children to give and not always to receive. And we must not give only to receive something in return, for God will bless us more than we can count on earth and in heaven.
We should give gifts even in rare or bad times. In 2 Corinthians 8:7-9, Paul spoke to the churches that were giving him financial gifts so that he could continue to serve Jesus. “But as you are excellent in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all perseverance and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace that you give. I do not command you, but I want to test. Compare the sincerity of your love with the sincerity of others By doing. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that he was rich, but for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” , by giving your time, volunteering, lending a helping hand, praying for someone in a time of need or just being a friend. We can do these things not only at Christmas, but all year round.
And finally, the true gift of Christmas is Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our society has moved away from celebrating the real reason for Christmas. Some of us believe that Santa Claus, Christmas trees, presents and food and wine are the real reason for this day. We give the world all the glory and praise and leave Jesus Christ out of the equation. God gave us His only Son, Jesus – the gift of life! John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This is the greatest gift, the gift of salvation, that only God can give. If we are sure to always keep Christ in Christmas, then when we give to others, it will become a natural expression of that gratitude throughout the year. James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights…” Merry Christmas!
