Language Service Providers – What Are They?

The term “language service provider” or “LSP” is not a common term used here in the United States. Some large companies with internal language divisions or those working within facilities that use linguists may be familiar with LSP but surprisingly I have found that many people have no idea what LSP is. Language service providers (LSP) are businesses that provide translation, interpretation, localization, language and cultural training services. An LSP typically provides the following services:

Explanation “spoken” – Language interpretation is the facilitation of verbal or sign language communication between users of different languages, either simultaneously or consecutively. The process is described by both the words interpretation and explanation. Additionally there are different modes of interpretation including consecutive and simultaneous/conventional.

Continuous interpretation occurs when the speaker/facilitator/teacher starts speaking and then pauses, waiting for the interpreter to interpret his or her statement in the target language. After the interpreter has finished interpreting, the speaker resumes where he left off.

Simultaneous/Conference Interpretation – Personally, I like to see and consider simultaneous and conference interpretation as two separate categories, but in essence the mode is the same. Simultaneous interpretation occurs when the speaker/presenter does not stop, but continues speaking at a natural pace. Rather than having an interpreter or team of interpreters interpret the speech/presentation after 3-4 seconds to interpret the speaker as accurately as possible.

Telephonic interpretation – Telephonic interpretation is communication between several people over the telephone who do not speak the same language. Interpreters help overcome this communication barrier by interpreting between the parties, continuously.

Translation “written”– Translation means communicating the meaning of a written word or word through an equivalent word in another language. When translating, the translator does not change meaning, nuance, register or meaning.

Language localization– Language localization can be defined as the second stage of a larger process (internationalization and localization) of product translation and cultural adaptation (for specific countries, regions, groups) for differences in different markets. Therefore, it is important not to reduce it to mere translation as it involves extensive study of the target culture to properly adapt the product. The localization process is usually associated with cultural adaptation and translation of subjective objects (such as software, video games, websites, etc.).

Language training services– Language training is generally a comprehensive program to facilitate language learning.

Cultural training services– Cultural training providers provide training to corporate and/or government employees or groups with the tools they need to function, communicate and work effectively in global or regional markets. These training services usually include area specific cultural.

To sum things up, Language Service Providers (LSP) may support all of the services listed above or may specialize in one or two. There is nothing wrong with either approach, as many LSPs have been very successful in their specialization while others have excelled in their diversification. There’s nothing wrong with asking an LSP what their expertise is, but keep in mind that regardless of their expertise, an LSP is only as good as their project management and linguistic team.
