Excel Tip – Create A Date Time Stamp In Excel With VBA
one of the the most A frequent question I get asked about Excel is how to date and timestamp Excel worksheets.
The solution is in the form of formula as below
=IF(B1<>“”,IF(A1=””,NOW(),A1),””)
This formula will deliver a timestamp, but there are some restrictions that require changing the iteration settings if the workbook is sent to another user.
1. Office button
2. Excel options
3. formulas
4. repetition
5. Change the default iteration to 1, so it only recalculates once before stopping.
If you are brave enough to take a small bit of VBA code, we can create an event handler macro which is a good alternative solution to using the formula method.
A client wanted to update the timestamp if he decided to repeatedly overwrite the contents of target cells. This little piece of code gives the solution I believe.
There is no need to insert a module or use a module in this piece of code, it is written directly into the worksheet where you want the timestamp to appear.
So, here is a step by step guide to insert time data stamp in Excel with VBA.
We are assuming that the date time stamp will be entered Column B When entered Column A.

Open your Excel worksheet and press F11 to open the Visual Basic editor.

Doubleclick the worksheet where your timestamp will appear—in this example, it’s Sheet 1.

Select Worksheet in the left hand drop down box and select Change in the right drop down box. (This will create a macro that runs when the worksheet changes), and the value target as a range is any cell we choose to apply it to.

We then want to type the following code below the first line that Excel generates for us.
If Target.Column = 1 then
Application.EnableEvents = False
cells(target. row, 2). value = date + time
Application.EnableEvents = True
end if
Let’s talk through the code. This is an If Then statement with the following meaning…
If the target column 1 changes, we want to change the cells in the target row of the second column to the date and time values. Easy huh? Now we have a few extra lines of code there, Application.EnableEvents. By adding these we make sure that the macro doesn’t turn on and off, turning off the macro and then turning it on as needed.
This solution allows overwriting previous entries, and will update the worksheet with the latest date time stamp. So if you find a formula way to insert a timestamp into an Excel worksheet then these few little lines of code could be your solution.
