Excel Tip – Paste A Name Into An Excel Formula

In this article I have a really quick, easy and very useful way to use named ranges that you have already created in your Excel workbook. If you haven’t used named ranges in Excel before, there are three great reasons to use them:

  1. Your formulas will make more sense.
  2. You can easily edit your formulas.
  3. You can easily write formulas super fast.

If you need to know how to create a named range in Excel then you can follow one of the two methods described below:

Method 1

Use the formula bar

First select a cell or group of cells Click on the name box Enter a name for your range

(Note that there are some conditions and or restrictions that apply to these names)

1- They can be a maximum of 255 characters long

2- They must start with either a letter or an underscore _

3- They can contain full stops

4- They cannot contain any spaces or other punctuation marks

Method 2

First, open a new Excel workbook

  1. Go to the Insert menu

  2. Hit the name

  3. Go to Define

  • The Define Name dialog box is opened for you

  • Enter a range name

  • You can adjust the range of cells in the context of the box if you need to

  • Click OK

Once you’ve set up your named ranges they’re ready to use in any formula you’re creating in your workbook. Start typing your formula, and once you need to use a named range you need to complete the following steps.

  • Press the F3 key

  • The Name Manager box will be displayed

  • After this all your named ranges will appear

  • Select the name of the range you want to include in your formula

  • Press OK

Here is an example to work through. I have a named range tax_rate, Which contains the tax rate that I want to use in my formulas. I also have a sales price amount of 10,500 in cell A2 of my worksheet. I want to create a new value in cell B2 that is the actual tax amount applied to the sales price of 10,500, where my sales tax rate is 23%. Let’s build a formula in cell D2 in my worksheet as below

=A2*tax_rate

Once you’re ready to insert a tax rate into your formula, press F3 and select a named range from your list.
