Essential Products for Indoor Cats

If you are interested in getting indoor cats, my advice is to skip the pet store and buy some basics before going to the shelter, if you think you will only see cats. Why? Because the odds are good that you will fall in love with at least one of those cute little faces and voila! You will have a cat, but no gear.

Take it from me, I know from experience! When I adopted my cat, Cody, I was mostly ready, but I wasn’t even close. Before heading to my hometown shelter, I quickly picked up a travel crate, which wasn’t really big enough, and a gimmicky litter box that I returned as soon as I had a chance to read some reviews. So there I was, running to buy cat food and a plain litter box while someone else took care of my new kitty.

My goal is to save you – and your new cat – from that headache! The following is a list of recommended starter items to make this process go more smoothly!

the food

I recommend buying food and flavor mixes, including both canned and dry varieties. Cats can be finicky in general but never is this more true than during the first few stressful days of adjusting to a new environment.

When shopping, keep in mind that grain-free canned food is recommended for optimal cat health. This results from its balance of nutrients that closely match a cat’s natural diet. This will help provide your cat with the protein and water it needs.

It is best to stick with a good quality cat food with high levels of protein. You want to look for 30-40 percent protein in dry food and 10 percent in canned.

Avoid foods containing corn (sometimes listed as “corn”), wheat, soy, and rice, especially if these are indicated as the first ingredient. Cats don’t need to eat grain!

As for flavor, lean more toward poultry-based foods like chicken and turkey rather than fish or seafood-based foods. The latter should be given on a limited basis, once or twice a week.

Recommended canned foods:

Evo

Select Freshpet

Innova

Diversity instinct of nature

Just Nourish by PetSmart*

Kalyan (grain free), especially chicken formula

verva*

Recommended solid foods:

Nature’s Balance Ultra Premium Dry

Diversity instinct of nature

Welfare Corps

* Cody’s favorite

Although the aforementioned varieties may be more expensive than grocery store brands, your cat won’t eat as much due to the lack of fillers and grains. I ate cat food that had rice in it; My cat easily consumed twice as much of that food as the Wellness grain-free product.

vessels

You can wait and start using these on your own, though if you choose to buy them now, go for bowls that are heavy or have rubber edges to prevent slipping. Stainless steel is preferred. Plastic and porcelain dishes can be scratched, allowing germs to accumulate.

Bowls with a slight contour or slope on the inside are best for canned food, which gets stuck to the edges of the bowl when the cat eats it.

Liter box

A traditional, large, high-sided litter box is encouraged, as opposed to a hooded cat litter box that traps odors. These litter boxes are inexpensive, widely available, and a good place to start.

If you are trying to get a kitten, check that one of the edges is low enough for the kitten to reach. If you plan to get a full-grown cat, make sure the box is big enough for the cat to run around without stepping on it. Think “clean gloves”.

Rubbermaid carries a great tall sided cat litter box with a ‘scoop out’ entrance that even older kittens can use.

If you are considering getting multiple indoor cats, purchase less than one box per cat to start. Understand that the rule of thumb is one box for each cat plus one.

And don’t forget a liter scoop to clean the box! Slates narrow, fine. Keeping a box spay and span is one of the best things you can do to ensure your cat develops and maintains good litter box habits! Clean the cat’s litter box at least once or twice a day!

garbage

Cats love odorless litter, and litter pickers are good. The best cat litter I’ve tried is Dr. Elsie is a precious cat. This brand clumps very well, and helps keep the litter box clean. ScoopAway’s unscented clumping litter is also a good choice.

a toy

It is recommended that you spend some time daily playing with your cat. Not only will it help you bond with your cat, but it’s also very entertaining!

I’ve never met a cat that doesn’t like batting at a feathery thing on a string, so this is a good place to start.

You can also pick up a laser pointer toy for about five dollars. My cat goes crazy chasing that little light around the living room. This is really good exercise for your cat.

And catnip is a great way to break the ice and help your cat relax!

The scratching post

Cats love and need to scratch! It is important that indoor cats are provided with a scratching post or pad as a suitable outlet for this behavior.

There are many options to choose from. To begin with, just be sure that what you buy is stable and won’t tip over when the cat puts its weight on it. If all else fails, a bit of wood or a carpet sample will do the trick.

Cody is totally hooked on his SmartyKat “ScratchScroll,” a wave-style scratcher that I got at Target for about $20. PetSmart carries something similar, the Dream Curl Curve Scratcher, for $29.

Crates and travel luggage

Purchase a travel crate large enough to allow an adult cat to move around comfortably.

If you are driving more than an hour to bring your cat home, it is suggested that you grab a bottle of Feliway to make the ride home more comfortable. This product mimics cat pheromones and has a calming effect. Just spray it on the crate before you put your cat inside. This will help calm your cat as it adjusts to its new environment.
