How The Haka Can Change Your Life
From an island nation of almost four million people, New Zealand produces such a great rugby team year after year, without fail? In many cases other rugby teams are just as talented and prepared. So what is it and how can you tap into it on a consistent basis to perform at your best and produce great results in your career, your relationships and your life?
I believe the answer lies in our psychology; Most of the things we do in our lives originate from our psychology, the rest is just mechanics. Let me ask you a question… Have you ever dragged yourself out of bed feeling tired? Stumbling about the place rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, dragging your feet into the bathroom and yawning and feeling like your jaw might crack? How is your energy level? What do you say to yourself? Perhaps, “Not another bloody day at work, I’d rather be in bed!” What do you focus on? Is it because of the fight you had with your partner the night before? Are you dreading another day of working for a boss you really can’t stand? And now the big question… what kind of day does a person in this frame of mind think await?
Can you imagine the All Blacks going out to play a Test match in these conditions? You don’t need to be a genius to predict the outcome. What about our friend who gets to work on time? I can imagine that his work will be less than productive, his communication style will be unnatural and the outputs he produces will be marginal.
So how can we perform at our best every day, day in and day out? We need to perform our own personal Haka to help keep us in a state of full frenetic physical, emotional and mental energy.
The Empowerment Triangle
There are three things that rule our kingdom at any given time, and these are:
the language we use and what we say to ourselves;
What we focus our attention on; and
How we move our bodies.
Everyone’s mind is chattering. Mine just happens to be with an Irish accent! There are even some people who read this right now and think to themselves, “This guy is crazy! Talk to yourself? I don’t talk to myself!” Whether we know it or not, we are constantly engaging in private dialogue with ourselves. Unfortunately, many of us say things that are unhelpful and negative that lead us to places we don’t want to be. Imagine for a moment Richie McKay thinking to himself, “Jeez, that’s a great opposing team, they look so fired up. I don’t think we’re going to be able to break that defense down. I hope I don’t drop the ball or give a penalty under the post.” .” How good do you think his game will be?
Words have meaning, they evoke thoughts and associations, and so changing our language will change the emotions we experience. Here is a simple formula to remember:
Thought -> Feeling -> Action -> Result
If you want good results in your life, choose your language (and your thoughts) very carefully.
It is known that depressed people tend to focus on past failures or past experiences that were painful to them at the time. They hold on to these painful experiences, relive them and create scripts or stories about why they cannot move on, why they are not good enough or worthy enough for a happy life.
Living like this is like driving a car looking in the rear view mirror.
Recently I did a firewalk but walking barefoot over hot coals was not a big “take away” for me. What really stood out in my mind was the powerful metaphor that the firewalk represents. First, if it is impossible to walk on hot coals without getting burned, with the right attention, anything is possible. But there is more! The most important thing for me was this lesson: it is important to focus on the end result in life and not the obstacle in front of you. If your attention goes to the smell of burning flesh, you will never make the first move. The only way to cross the burning chasm is to concentrate, only, when you reach the other side and very deliberately, walk in that direction, you will celebrate. What outcomes can you focus on in your life to help overcome the burning coal (fear) in your path?
Changes in how we move our bodies have a direct impact on our emotional states. For example, the physiology of a depressed person is very different from that of someone who has just won the lotto! Slumping our shoulders, lowering our heads, breathing and allowing our facial muscles to literally “trigger” the emotions associated with depression! Conversely, standing tall, holding our head up, breathing deeply and being positive and empowering in a positive and empowering way stimulates emotions that take us to a state of empowerment where you feel like you can overcome any challenge…and it can be done. In a moment!
For me, the Haka is the perfect metaphor for getting yourself into a peak state. It’s the perfect ritual to change our mental chatter for the positive, shift our focus to what’s in front of us, and change our physiology to prepare for action…major action!
Now you know what you know! What are key phrases you can say to yourself to prepare you for what’s in your life? What will you focus on to move you powerfully into the future? How do you prepare your body to increase your energy levels and ignite positive emotions and overcome whatever obstacles are in your path?
Now you know what you know! What rituals do you do when you wake up in the morning? How are you preparing for your next important meeting? And perhaps most importantly, when you come home after a long day at the office, what rituals do you put in place to prepare for the most important time of your day, walking through your front door and spending the evening with your family?
Hat tip to Tony Robbins for transforming a complex topic into an easy to understand framework.
