How to Discover Keywords That Pay – A Must For Any Online-Business Success

To be successful in any web-business you must realize that keyword selection is very important for your SEO campaign. If you go directly for searched keywords, you may soon face the problem of extremely high competition. This, in turn, may make you think that ranking well on such keywords is not worth your time and investment. In the worst case, you may conclude that it is almost impossible to get top positions in Google for those terms.

If you want your SEO campaign to be efficient, you have to act smart and start it with competitive analysis and keyword research. Their purpose is to discover keywords and phrases, which are both very popular and, at the same time, less used by your competitors.

This article will give you a detailed guide on how to find the keywords that will turn your SEO campaign and consequently your e-business into a success.

The program of activities is summarized below:

1. Search Google and find the keywords used by your top 5 competitors. List the ~50 most frequently used keywords and phrases for which your competitors show top-ranking.

2. Use a thesaurus and expand the list by adding synonyms with appropriate adjectives.

3. Type your listing in the search box of the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, tick the “Use Synonyms” box and hit “Get Keyword Ideas”.

4. Choose to display the following columns: “Estimated Average CPC” and “Estimated Search Volume” (both, average and for the last month).

5. Export the data in csv-format, open the file in MS Excel and sort the data by the “Approximate Search Volume” column in descending order.

6. Cut something with less than 300 searches a month. Also, drop all key phrases with consistently declining search trends throughout the year.

7. Look through the data and leave only the key phrases that are meaningful and relevant to your business. For a small website (under a few ten pages), cut the list to ~300 key phrases that show the highest number of searches. For larger sites you need a longer list.

8. Add seven new columns named: “Searches/Month”, “Bulk”, “Direct”, “Optimized”, “Opportunity”, “Effectiveness” and “Potential” and save the file as an Excel document. To avoid confusion, remember that in addition to the name you assign, each column also has a heading, which is a letter assigned by Excel.

9. Now, a rather tedious, but very important bit. Using Google, type the following combinations into the search field: a) “key phrase”; b) allinanchor: “key phrase” and c) allintitle: “key phrase”, where “key phrase” is one of your key phrases. Do this for each phrase from your list.

10. Write the three numbers displayed by Google for each key phrase in the “bulk”, “direct”, and “optimized” columns respectively.

11. In the columns “Chance”, “Effectiveness” and “Probability”, in the cell immediately below the column name, type the following formulas: “=MS^2/L1”, “=MS^2/L2”, and “=MS^ 2/L3”, where L1, L2 and L3 are the column headings (letters) corresponding to the columns named “Bulk”, “Direct” and “Optimized” respectively; MS – is the number of monthly searches.

12. Fill in those columns by highlighting the cell with the formula (in each column) and dragging it down to the bottom of the column.

13. Now, choose the keywords that exhibit the highest values for “Approximate Search Volume”, “Effectiveness” and “Potential” and the lowest values for “Direct”.

14. If the number of suitable key phrases is now less than ~150, go back to step 7 and add more words. Alternatively, expand the list using a thesaurus to find additional synonyms and combine them with appropriate adjectives.

15. After you finish, you should have ~150-200 most efficient keywords in your list, which you are going to use in your SEO campaign.

Therefore, you have just built a list of the most popular key phrases, which, on the one hand, display a high search volume, and on the other hand, are used less by your competitors. They give you a much greater chance of turning your SEO campaign into a success!

Now you are ready for on-site and off-site optimization.

Those, however, are topics for separate articles to come out soon. Watch out for these!
